Pokémon - The Story of Satoshi Tajiri (1)
Satoshi Togari grew up in rural Japan. He spent his childhood exploring the long grass searching for insects. He loved insects so much that the children at school called him ‘Mr. Bug’.
At school he found it hard to concentrate. He did not get along with his teachers. He had a difficult time remembering lessons. Years later, he was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. But at school, his teachers thought he was just lazy.
Satoshi loved video-games. He would spend hours of his free time at the local arcades. He even got given a space invader cabinet. One day he took apart his console to learn about how it worked! His parents were worried about him.
Eventually, he started a magazine about video games. He called it Game Freak. Because of the magazine, he met someone called Ken Tsukimoto. Ken loved drawing and video games. They became friends. Ken designed characters for video games.
Satoshi wanted to create a video game. He saw a couple of children playing a new Gameboy handheld device. Their devices were joined together. An idea sparked within Satoshi.
He remembered the games that he used to play as a child collecting bugs and insects. He imagined two GameBoys connected by a link cable with little bugs crawling down the wire.
He took his idea to Nintendo. At first it did not work. It was too complicated. But Satoshi did not give up and neither did Ken. They kept working at their idea and eventually it became a success.
