Joint Working Groups

    • Overview of available time sources for Protection, Automation & Control Systems (PACS), their characteristics, advantages and drawbacks.
    • Discussion and scope of available standards and guides for reference time sources and time synchronisation within PACS and their implementation.
    • Discussion of requirements, in terms of synchronisation accuracy, for different protection and control functions, including Wide-Area Protection and Monitoring and differential protections

Protection & Automation (JWG B5/D2.67)

4 of 8

Joint Working Groups

  • Identify the key parameters and information as required for the Transmission System Operator–Distribution System Operator (TSO-DSO) information and data exchange processes
  • Formally defined business and use cases as based on IEC 62559 standard and the Common Information Model (CIM) as defined in the IEC 61970/61968/62325 standard series.
  • The CIM standardizes semantics in order to achieve interoperability across areas such as, network operations, asset management and electricity markets

System Control & Operation (JWG D2/C2.48)

Joint Working Groups

    • Utilization of data from smart meter system
    • General outlines of smart meter system in each country, area or company
    • Summary of examples on how smart meter data has been already utilised
    • Actual evaluation cases and applications of data utilisation
    • Propose potential use cases in future power systems

SC D2 Interaction with SC C2 – System Control & Operation

  • Conventional on-line Situational Awareness (SA) is primarily based on model-based simulation software to assess potential critical conditions and determine necessary preventive/corrective actions
  • Increasing availability of various data from advanced sensors and monitoring systems can improve SA through advanced data analytics and enhanced visualization
  • A variety of data sources can be used
    • Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs)
    • Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs)
    • Digital fault recorders, power quality monitors, equipment sensors, geographic information systems (GIS), lightning detection systems, weather systems, infrared sensors, etc.
