know

  • STI vs STD
  • Every 10 seconds a teenager gets an STI
  • One in two sexually active young people will have an STI by age 25

  • Sexually active teens have higher rates of STI’s (compared to other age groups) and are less likely to get treatment!

  • Ages 15-24 have the most new STI infections

Trichomonas

  • Spread by contact with body fluids
  • May or may not have symptoms
  • Symptoms where infected: Discharge, pain when going to bathroom, irritation, etc.
  • 3 point testing!
  • Treatable

Syphilis

  • 3 stages of syphilis:
  • Primary: open areas “chancre”
  • secondary: rash
  • Tertiary: ? organ damage … death
  • Spread by contact
  • Tested by drawing blood
  • Treatable with antibiotics

Herpes

  • Painful blisters in area of contact
  • Spread by intimate contact
  • Can pass even when not visible
  • Take weeks to heal, reoccur forever
  • No CURE! Medications available for symptoms

Human PapilLoma

Virus (HPV)

  • Many different types (ID by #)
  • Some cause warts some can cause Cancer
  • spread by intimate contact
  • Vaccine available to help prevent
  • Treat symptoms/abnormalities

  • Decisions made now may not affect you for several years!

HIV

  • Transmitted by exchange of body fluids, Injection drug use, Pregnancy/delivery/breastfeeding
  • Not transmitted by casual contact!
  • Blood test/fingerstick (rapid test)
  • No cure but medications to become “undetectable”

PrEP

  • A pill a day to keep HIV AWAY
  • Requires visits every 3 months
  • Does not prevent other STI’s

Condoms

  • Never use two at the same time
  • Check expiration
  • Proper storage
  • Check for Tears and holes
  • USE PROPERLY

Emergency contraception

  • Take as soon as possible after unprotected sex
  • Will not terminate an existing pregnancy or harm a baby/pregnancy
  • May prevent pregnancy
