The Problem

Under-representation of student women in entrepreneurship and business

In the context of prevalent unemployment, student women run the risk of being unemployed, even when they complete their university studies.

In the context of rampant gender-based violence, student women often feel forced to remain in abusive partnerships due to not having the financial resources to support themselves if they leave the abusive partner.

SWEEP: Inception

Background and History

SWEEP, the Student Women Economic Empowerment Project, emerged in response to the urgent need to empower student women facing gender-based violence and under-representation in entrepreneurship.
Launched during the annual EDHE Lekgotla 2021 on December 8, 2021, SWEEP set out to equip student women with essential skills and support for entrepreneurial success.
Beginning with 42 members at its inception, SWEEP has since grown and now boasts 474 members, including 13 Chapters across 12 Universities.
The programme journey commenced with pairing 26 students with experienced businesswomen for mentorship, laying the groundwork for an ongoing mentorship program integral to SWEEP's mission.
Extensive university research provided invaluable insights into the barriers hindering women's entrepreneurial participation.
SWEEP envisions hybrid events uniting student women with seasoned entrepreneurs, facilitating knowledge exchange and skill development. Through mentorship sessions and a nurturing ecosystem.
SWEEP aims to empower student women not only economically but also as catalysts for change in the face of gender-based violence.
In essence, SWEEP transcends being a mere project; it embodies a movement dedicated to breaking barriers, empowering student women, and fostering a more inclusive and equitable future in entrepreneurship.

Once approved by EDHE SWEEP National, your chapter receives a welcome package comprising essential items for key roles:

For Executives: Chairperson, Co-Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Public Relations Officer, Events Officer, and SWEEP Chapter Coordinator.
Package Contents: Welcome Letter, 7 SWEEP Pins, 7 T-Shirts,7 Notebooks and 7 Pens
Additional Items: Other executive members' items are to be procured separately.

SWEEP Chapter Reporting

SWEEP National Annual Report:

SWEEP National will require an annual report to be submitted end of November 2024 documenting events conducted throughout the year.
Includes comprehensive details of events, challenges faced, achievements, and membership status.

EDHE Reporting Requirements:

EDHE mandates the submission of an events calendar and a report detailing activities undertaken.
Report should encompass challenges encountered, achievements, and chapter membership updates.

Reporting Template Access:

Once finalised, we will share a reporting template available for download on the SWEEP page, ensuring ease of access and a streamlined reporting process for all chapters.

EDHE SWEEP and British Council

EDHE SWEEP has collaborated with the British Council on SWEEP, uniting for the SWEEP UK Residential Programme. This partnership offers a distinctive learning opportunity for female student entrepreneurs through a week-long Residential Programme in the UK. The programme includes workshops, knowledge exchange, networking, and a visit to the London School of Economics, nurturing a global outlook and empowering participants in their chapters and entrepreneurial journey’s.

Collaborating with the British Council for the SWEEP UK Residential Programme, providing a unique learning opportunity for female student entrepreneurs.
Programme includes workshops, knowledge exchange, networking, and a visit to the London School of Economics.
Aimed at nurturing a global outlook and empowering participants in their entrepreneurial journeys.
Eleven universities participating, with 19 students and coordinators nominated for the trip.
Departure scheduled for May 25th, returning on June 1st, 2024.
Actively seeking a Consultant to develop SWEEP programme curriculum and content.

Objectives:

Promote women's participation in entrepreneurship within universities, emphasizing businesses with positive societal impacts.
