Amidst the chaos of the airport terminal, as he waited for the gate to open, the soldier shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Stoic, immobile and inscrutable, he stared straight-ahead, like a statue frozen in time. His legs and back were stiff from the day before; he wasn’t sure how he was physically going to endure the flight home. His sight-line darted up to the clock, surrounded by the harsh glare of the airport lights, which made his eyes water in the unnatural brightness. No matter how desperately he glared at the time, it continued to slow relentlessly. He felt worried: legs twitching; lip biting; mind foggy. With half an hour until take-off, he hunched forward and beads of sweat emerged from across his forehead, pouring down into his blinking eyes.
