Students will be recognized quarterly. Keep track on your College and Career Checklist in the Google Classroom.

Get involved, and learn to work with others

  • Join a club or Participate in a school activity1
  • Join an athletic team, academic team, musical group, or theatre production1
  • Attend a school event for a group that you do not belong to - Athletics, theatre, government, etc.

Develop rigorous academic skills

  • Declare an intent to complete an Honors Diploma2
  • Form a study group for final exams3
  • Take an AP Test4

Reflect on your skills, and look for ways to improve

  • Create a portfolio to keep track of your best work. Add a paper, project, or photos of artwork5
  • Start a “brag sheet” and update it quarterly6

Explore opportunities

  • Take your first college visit
  • Student-Athletes: Sign up for the NCAA Core Course Calculator7

Make a difference

  • Volunteer at least once and record your service8
  • Start a new initiative at Southview - Club, activity, service event, etc.9

Do you know what you need to do to prepare yourself for life after high school? This guide will help you fill out your College and Career Checklist. We’ve divided tasks on the checklist into five goals. Each goal has its own page in this presentation with a description, tasks, and resources to help prepare you for life beyond Southview. When you’ve completed a task, be sure to record it on your College and Career Checklist!

Resources

Get involved, and learn to work with others

Employers and colleges are looking for involved, engaged citizens. By getting involved in an activity outside of the typical school day, you’ll learn to work with others, develop your talents, and discover new interests.

Tasks

  • Join a club or participate in a school activity
  • Join an athletic team, academic team, musical group, or theatre production
  • Attend a school event for a group that you do not belong to - Athletics, theatre, government, etc.
  • Plan for employment, internship, or job shadowing

Develop rigorous academic skills

No matter if you plan to go to college, join the military, or enter the workforce directly after high school, having the academic skills needed to succeed in school will serve you well. Start developing good work habits and study skills now by completing the following tasks.

Tasks

  • Declare an intent to complete an Honors Diploma

  • Find a note-taking strategy that works for you
  • Take the ACT or SAT

Reflect on your skills, and look for ways to improve

Colleges and employers want proof of your skills. They also want to see that you can reflect on your abilities and take steps on your own to improve them. Complete the following tasks to help you build these skills.

Tasks

  • Create a portfolio to keep track of your best work. Add a paper, project, or photos of artwork

  • Advocate for yourself by asking a teacher for help when you need it
