1.Brief introduction

  • The dark sky is nature of the vast Gobi region for all time. There is need to protect dark clear sky in this region.

2.Goals

  • The objective of this project to organize national seminar for “Environmental protection in Gobi region of Mongolia using astronomical outreach activities, and to protect the night from light pollution and dust pollution

  • To make people to understand that The night sky, protected around the world as a shared heritage benefiting all living things.

Activities

  • Training of herders ,nomads and environmentalists with telescope observation-Umnugovi province in August 2021.

  • Lectures and talks on protection environment using astronomy outreach for miners and policy makers-Umnugovi province in August 2021. International participants and astronomers participated and delivered talk for the seminar.

  • Online workshop /Astronomy and Art for environmental protection in Mongolia/ 1-4 July 2021 in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia and national seminar in Umnugobi province

  • Training for environmentalists and environmentalists in Gobi and star party in Umnugobi province

  • Individuals from different culture ethnicities were invited for the Training and star party activities.
  • female scientists and girl students and teachers were encouraged to participate.
  • People and herders from disadvantaged socio economic backgrounds.

“Handouts for Astronomy and Environment in Gobi, Mongolia”were produced.

4.Outcomes

  • This project made people in Gobi to understand that mining can lead to environmental degradation, loss of biodiversity, increased prominence of diseases, and dust storm if it is managed poorly.

  • If mining is managed responsibly, mining can create jobs, facilitate income, economic development, and lead to improved quality of lifestyle in Gobi.

  • Handouts for Astronomy and Environment in Gobi, Mongolia” were produced.

  • Miners and local environmentalist learned how to protect dark sky.

  • People in Gobi understand and preserve ecologically and culturally significant areas.

 

  • We created discussions among participants about how to free Gobi of dust storms. For this, we used astronomical outreach star parties.

Challenges

They have no idea how astronomical outreach can be an excellent tool for protecting the dark sky. It was the biggest developmental challenge for our project.
