Counseling and Guidance

MLKHS Counselors here are to support you throughout your high school journey. Your counselor will guide you through:

  • Course selection
  • Graduation Requirements
  • A-G Requirements (CSU and UC Admissions requirements)
  • Career Guidance
  • Navigating NCAA eligibility course requirements

Counselors meet with students one on one each semester, present in classrooms and are available to students 8 am- 4 pm. STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO VISIT THE COUNSELING OFFICE TO SPEAK WITH THEIR COUNSELOR WITHOUT AN APPOINTMENT BEFORE SCHOOL, DURING LUNCH AND AFTER SCHOOL.

Link Crew LOVES the Class of 2029!!!

Link Crew is a support program that works to help transition the freshmen class onto a thriving Martin Luther King High School campus. We strive to be heart-driven role models who take time to listen to freshmen, engage in support, and celebrate successes. A few of our activities include a football tailgate party, “How to Study” Workshop, finals tutoring sessions and more!

Introduction to Literature- Course Description:

How do I know what class to take?

  • Introduction to Literature (*Special Education)- paced to fit individual student needs, with accomodations
  • Introduction to Literature (*English Language Development)- with support strategies for English language learners
  • Introduction to Literature (*General Education)- Predominantly in class assignments/reading, focuses on foundational writing/analysis, variety in writing and speaking
  • Introduction to Literature (*Honors)- Goes deeper into the text, expectation to work more independently, have assignments/reading done prior to class time, students need to take more ownership of their learning, preparation for higher levels like Honors and AP (Advanced Placement)
  • Language Workshop as a support elective- focuses on intensive reading intervention, explicit instruction to build literacy skills such as foundational reading and writing skills

*Freshman classes, regardless of honor’s distinction, are not weighted.

* Intro to Literature is a requirement for graduation, regardless of placement.

CTE Computer Science

Exploring CS

In this class you will get to:

  • Develop a website
  • Create a your own game
  • Write an application to solve a problem
  • Create an app with a micro:bit
  • Use AI to design a Machine Learning app

AP CS Principles

This class covers a broad range of topics such as programming, algorithms, the Internet, big data, digital privacy and security, and the societal impacts of computing.

You will be writing many apps requiring more rigorous coding concepts then Exploring CS.

and Injury Management

  • Learn how to treat and rehabilitate the active population.
  • Get certification in CPR, First Aid, Bloodborne Pathogens, Stop the Bleed, OSHA-10.

King Mock Trial

Are you interested in law, acting, public speaking and building collaborative skills?

Then Mock Trial is for you! Mock Trial is a competition in which students simulate a real trial. Teams must prepare both sides of the case (prosecution and defense) and then compete with other schools. MLK

took 3rd place at the state level in 2018
