Space: Distribution of Features

LEARNING TARGET:

STUDENTS CAN DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN DENSITY, CONCENTRATION AND PATTERN

2 of 8

Distribution-

The arrangement of a feature in space is its distribution.

There are 3 main properties of distribution: density, concentration and pattern

This map is showing the geographic distribution of people tweeting about protests occurring in Brazil.

Think about density, concentration and pattern.

3 of 8

Density

The frequency with which something occurs in space.

It can be houses, people, # of cell phones, and then are measured in miles, acres etc.

Also a large number of features does not mean high density because of the ratio of land to feature.

What can you say about the difference in density between 1952 and 2013? ?

Concentration

The extent of a feature’s spread over space.

If the objects are close together they are clustered, spread apart they are dispersed.

What can you say about the change in concentration of the clubs between 1952 and 2013.

6 of 8

Pattern

The geometric arrangement of objects in space.

They can be geometric, linear, or irregular.
