Guided Reading Remotely

TECHNICAL SET UP

You will need to use either Google Meet or Zoom to connect with your students virtually, and your students will need access to the same platform.

Using online platforms that can be interactive

  • SeeSaw
  • Nearpod
  • Google Slides ( Pear Deck )

Use a “gallery view” so that you are able to see all your students at once as you would sitting at a small-group table

FINDING GOOD DIGITAL TEXT

  • Reading A-Z -
  • Readworks and Newsela - These do not use F&P levels, but do provide lexile levels. If you are looking for shorter reading passages and articles, this is the way to go.
  • Get Epic - Get Epic has a huge collection of digital trade books.

STRUCTURE OF LESSON

Sample:

  • Sight word Review
  • Reread last book
  • Vocabulary Review
  • Phonic mini lesson
  • Build Background / access prior knowledge
  • Read book

Comprehension / write / assess

Expectations and Consistency

Set your expectations of what you think your guided reading groups should look like virtually.

  • Teach (reteach) your students how to engage in the lesson in the new virtual setting. Students may not transfer the in-person procedures they know to the new environment. For example, you may need to reteach the visual cues that are essential for ensuring choral response
  • Set up the same meeting times so students get use to the schedule. For example Group A meets every Monday and Wednesday at 10 am. Group B meets every Tuesday and Thursday 1 pm.
