We need to begin examining the relationships between print, power, and privilege. We need to expand our understanding of what writing is and how we produce and share it, too. When we define writing as the production of alphabetic text or print alone, we compromise our students’ brain development, preparing them for lifetimes of adversity. How might we begin to understand and intentionally disrupt the history that remains with all of us? I began by challenging my own deficit thinking.
