Teacher Talking Points:

If you want each student to have a hard copy of the rubric you can print them prior to this lesson (it’s several pages long so this may not be ideal) otherwise they will be viewing it on your large screen TV while you present and will access as needed via the website.

Overall discussion of the Rubric:

The goal of the capstone is to reflect and present on how their capstone and the process relates to each trait and skill
They have to present Knowledge RWC, Knowledge Math (3 out of the 8 principles) and 2 other traits/skills of their choice
They have to be prepared to present EVERY trait, as there will be questions from the evaluation panel about at least one of the remaining 4 traits that were not presented.
Students HAVE to score at least a 2 in every presented trait (to include the one additional trait they are asked about)

Any criteria that receives a score of 0 will have to be remediated and re-presented

An advanced score of 2.7 or higher will qualify for the scholarship that students will re-present for using a shortened version of their Capstone presentation: AWARDS = 1st place= $4,000, 2nd place= $3,000, 3rd place= $2,000, 4th place= $1,000

While the Capstone presentation should primarily be a reflection of learning, reference to the product or service is necessary.
The “Artifacts” rubric item is to evaluate how well the student brings an explanation and illustration of his or her product or service into the presentation
The “Evidence” item evaluates the students use of outside research to provide insight to their project or service and overall reflection of learning. The pre-search paper and knowledge provided by a mentor will help in this endeavor.
Two areas can be evaluated under the “Written Expression” bullet:

Primarily, the presentation itself should be judged on whether or not it’s writing is clear, concise, logical, and well-organized.
If the evaluator wishes, the student’s pre-search paper, within the portfolio, may be viewed but does not have to be.

Students will have highly varied skills when it comes to “Oral Expression”. The key to evaluating this line item is to judge how well a student has prepared. The presentation should appear to be well-rehearsed. Effort in accomplishing the presentation is more important than overall performance.

Teacher Talking points:

A student is required to attain a “proficient” score in at least THREE of the eight principles of the math category (this slide and the next) . Students must make clear during their presentation what specific mathematical principles they are addressing.
Not all Math line items must relate directly to the use of math. This first one “Makes sense of problems” is a good example. A key to understanding the math elements is to understand that math teaches us more than numbers and their manipulation. It teaches us problem solving, organization, perseverance, etc. By choosing some of the math line items to present, a student whose Capstone is less math oriented, may still prevail. This methodology also prevents the evaluator from hearing about contrived number manipulations that don’t stand up to the 9-12 math levels.
On this slide: Principle #s 2 “Reasons abstractly and quantitatively” and 4 “models with mathematics”, are examples of items that relate directly to math and a student could choose one or all of them if his/her project lends itself to this type if reflection.
On this slide: Principle #s 1 “Makes sense of problems, #3 “Constructs viable arguments and critiques reasoning of others” do not have to directly relate to math and could be the best choice for a student who’s project does not lend itself directly to math.

This can also be determined by the peer evaluation if in a group. A student might reflect on the change in their behavior over time, as well.
Academic challenge is based upon the academic level of the student to begin with and is therefore different for each individual.
Relating the skills learned in the Capstone to a student’s future career goal is vitally important here.

Agility & Contribution

Agility can be explained by how the student overcame technology or other challenges by applying skills and process learned in order to be agile and take charge of challenging circumstances.
How the student contributes to the solving of the problem can be shown through differentiation and independence - what did the student do to help solve the problem and how did that contribute value to the process and audience/community being served?

Civility & Collaboration

Reflection on this item should include examples of how they demonstrated civility and not just how they collaborated with anyone, but how WELL they worked with others, to include both group members or others they worked with in the school and community. It may also be possible to judge this item during the questioning phase of the presentation.
Group work and peer evaluation can be very telling in these categories. If a student works individually, how are they interacting with their mentor? Also, if a student provides a service, how is their interaction with the public?

Integrity & Leadership

Giving credit when an idea is not a student’s own a big part key of evaluating Integrity.
The mentor may also be able to contribute to these categories and the student could then reflect on the impact of that information.
Peer evals can factor into this as well as student’s reflection of how they achieved Leadership even if they are not part of a group.
