Why do we celebrate Navaratri?

  • Navaratri literally means nine nights.

  • In honor of nine manifestations of Durga.

  • The basic aim is to gain blessings of Shakti.

  • The first three days, we worship Durga to remove all bad qualities such as greed, dishonesty etc.
  • The next three days, we worship Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth, to acquire positive qualities such as love, compassion, etc.
  • The last three days, we worship Saraswati for spiritual knowledge.
  • The basic aim is to propitiate Shakti, the Goddess in her aspect of Power, to bestow upon her devotee health, wealth, and knowledge.

  • Durga Puja is the greatest Hindu festival in which Bhagwan is adored as Mother.

  • In some places her image/moorty is worshiped for nine days.

  • Another popular way of celebrating Navaratri is by doing a Garba or Dandiya dance as part of Pooja.
  • A special Aarti for the Durga devi is performed.

  • Swami Vivekananda was one of the great Durga devotees of recent time.
  • His message:

Dharma (duties) forms the relationship between you, your family, your society and the world.

Navarati Message

Seek the blessings of Shakti (Goddess)

This is a big social event where families gather for

an utsav (joyous celebration) filled with fasting,

chanting, and dancing and to seek blessings of

Amba Ma who is also known as Durga, Lakshmi, or

Saraswati.

�Tenth Day�Vijayadashami or Dashahara�

  • Dash means Ten. Hara means to Remove.
  • After nine days of Navaratri Puja, on the tenth day all bad tendencies are removed.
  • Bhagwan Ram chose this day to bring an end to the torturous life of Ravana.
