What have you heard about labor & delivery?

Enjoy your life saver!

No crunching!

How does it change while you enjoy it?

Does anyone know what centimeters have to do with labor and delivery?

5 of 17

  • Effacement= the thinning of the cervix
  • Dilation= the widening of the cervix
  • Both are necessary to allow the baby to pass through the birth canal
  • Both occur during contractions and the first stage of labor

The cervix has to progress from the blueberry to the bagel in order for the baby to come out.

Today we will create a visual to illustrate some of those changes

Please find your teams for today

Each team will need a kit which includes:

One pumpkin

One carving knife

One marker

One baking pan

Scissors

Paper towels

Posterboard

Ruler

Step 1: Measure & Draw Your Template

What is your team’s cervical measurement?

Draw a line that length on your posterboard. Find the center point on that line and mark it.

On that center point, draw a second line, perpendicular to the first (make a perfect x in the center)

Fold your posterboard on both of those lines

Draw a curved line to connect the end of each line. Cut along that line.

Show your circle to your teacher

Step 2: Draw the mouth

Determine where the circle should go on your pumpkin to represent the mouth.

Trace around it with your marker

Ask the teacher to check it

Cut the circle for the mouth along the lines

Step 3: Cut the mouth

Use the carving knife to carefully cut the circle you have drawn for the mouth

When you have finished, carefully cut a circle around your pumpkin stem, about 1.5-2” around the actual stem

Scoop out the pulp and seeds and place them in your baking pan; throw away

Get a paper towel wet and wipe down the outside of your pumpkin

Step 4: Add the eyes

Use the pattern provided to cut the eyes for your pumpkin

Glue them together, then attach to the pumpkin

Step 5: Add the hat

Create a hat for your pumpkin from the supplies available

Be sure to include the measurement of your pumpkin’s mouth on the hat

Attach the hat to your pumpkin

Step 6: Arrange the pumpkins

Arrange your pumpkins in order from 1cm to 10cm

Did you know the cervix had to change that much?

What do you think would happen if the mother tried to push the baby before dilation was complete?

What would the doctors or midwives do if the mother failed to fully dilate?

What questions does this generate for you?
