Is a course that may be completed prior to enrolling in a course or taken at the same time.
Remember!
Read the requisite statement for each course that you’re interested in.
An Advisory
Is a recommended but not required course that will help you to be successful.
A Corequisite
A Prerequisite
Is a requirement you must satisfy BEFORE taking a course--such as completing a lower-level course first.
19
Examples
ELIT 10: Introduction to Fiction has an advisory requisite.
This means that any student can register for the course, but it is advised that you complete EWRT 1A or ESL 5 first.
MATH 1C: Calculus has a prerequisite.
This means that it is required that students complete MATH 1B or equivalent before registering for this course.
20
You can demonstrate your eligibility (meaning that you can meet a prerequisite) with any of the following:
1. Previous college credit
The Admissions Office can apply your previous college credit to meet De Anza’s prerequisites via the Prerequisite Clearance Process and Transcript Evaluation.
2. AP Exam Score
The Admissions Office accepts many Advanced Placement (AP) exams with a score of ‘3’ or higher to meet prerequisite requirements.
3. English & Math Assessments
Complete the assessment process with the Assessment Center to become eligible for EWRT 1A and up to MATH 1A.
The Assessment Center also offers Science Proficiency Exams.
21
Note: There are special processes for World Language and CIS prerequisite clearances
Previous college credit
Submit unofficial transcripts to daclearprereq@fhda.edu along with a completed prerequisite clearance form.
Please note that only lower-division college-level coursework will be used. Any upper division or graduate-level material will be ignored. You may speak directly to the respective academic division who may be able to use the coursework to clear you.
22
Advanced Placement Exam Score of ‘3’ or higher
Submit unofficial AP scores of ‘3’ or higher to daclearprereq@fhda.edu along with a completed prerequisite clearance form.

De Anza’s English & Math Assessment Process
If you are planning to take English or math courses, or any course that has an English or math prerequisite, you'll need to complete our assessment process.
If you are NOT planning to take English or math courses, or any courses that have an English or math prerequisite, then you don't need an English or math course placement.
Science Proficiency
If you are interested in taking Biology 6A, Biology 40A or Chemistry 1A, please visit the Assessment Center's Science Exam webpage for more information about testing out of lower-level courses.

STEP 4: Complete the Online High School Permission Form
The High School Permission Form is how De Anza obtains electronic signatures from your parent/guardian and high school administrator so that you can take classes with us.
YAY! The high school permission form no longer requires students to have a De Anza student email account.
30
Permission Form Pro Tip #1
A completed permission form can take up to 15 business days to process. Additional delays may occur if the form is incomplete.
Monitor your email carefully.
Once your paperwork is processed, you can register for classes.
31
Permission Form Pro Tip #2
You will only be permitted to register for the courses that are listed on your permission form.
You can list alternate courses on the form.
Remember! It is your responsibility to make sure you’re eligible for the courses that you’re interested in.
32
Dual Enrollment Program Unit Limitations & Fees
You will not have to pay tuition or fees if you take 11 or fewer units per quarter in fall, winter or spring – or six or fewer in summer.
However, if you take more than 11 units in fall, winter or spring – or more than six units in summer – at De Anza, Foothill College or the two colleges combined, you will be charged tuition and full-time student fees. See our Fees at a Glance webpage.
33
Requesting to take more units...
STEP 1: Understand that you may be charged fees. See our Fees at a Glance webpage.
STEP 2: Indicate on your high school permission form that you’d like to request to take additional units. You’ll also need to upload a letter of support from your high school counselor.
You’ll want to tell us how you’ve prepared yourself for being a full-time college student while attending high school.
Remember: In general, you’ll need to devote 2 hours of studying for each hour of class meeting time.
