For Teachers - Tips for success! Deleteme

Although online instruction may be new to you, teaching is not. Think about how your typical classroom interactions will translate to an online environment.

  • Where will you post tasks and assignments?

  • How should students communicate with you and other students? Email, message forum, Google Classroom, Google Docs, etc.

  • What should students do when they get stuck?

  • How will you provide feedback?

  • How will you track student progress throughout the week?

How to show up to a virtual class:

  • Post a weekly announcement to provide an overview of the coming week’s topic or a recap of the previous week’s work, or both.
  • Respond to questions posted in an online question-and-answer discussion forum or sent to you by email.
  • Hold online office hours according to a schedule, by appointment, or both.
  • Post a quick video to clarify misconceptions about a class topic or assignment.
  • Grade and return students’ work in a timely fashion.
  • Talk with students in online discussions.

Time to Discover! What lives in a pond? (from readworks.org)

A pond is a body of freshwater. It is usually smaller than a lake. Ponds are not as deep as lakes are. Water in a river or a stream moves, but pond water stays still.

A pond is a habitat. A habitat is a place in nature where animals and plants live. Ponds are home to lots of living things.

Many animals live in, above, or near ponds. Fish, turtles, and snails live in the water. Ducks and other birds live above the water. Other animals live near ponds. Those animals include frogs, beavers, and muskrats.

Plants live in ponds, too. Cattails and algae are two kinds of plants often found in ponds. Another plant that lives in ponds is the water lily. Its roots go to the bottom of the pond. Its wide leaves float on top of the water.

Time to Discover! What lives in the desert? (from readworks.org)

A desert is a dry place with little rain. How little? A desert gets less than ten inches of rain each year. Some deserts are hot. A few can be cold. A desert is a habitat. A habitat is a place where animals and plants live.

Hot deserts are home to many kinds of living things. Animals living there include owls, snakes, lizards, and coyotes. Another hot desert animal is the kangaroo rat. It sleeps underground during the day, when the weather is hot. The kangaroo rat comes out at night, when it is cooler. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from food. They eat mostly seeds.

Some plants live in the hot desert. Only a few kinds of trees and bushes can survive there. One of the most common desert plants is the cactus. The cactus collects and stores water in its stem. Sharp spines protect most cacti from animals.
