Exhale Ideas and Planning

2 of 9

Two Things to Consider

There are two key things to consider when you plan your exhale:

  1. What do you want to do?
  2. How long do you have? Choose a less complex project for when you have less time (for example, you read a longer novel) and choose a more complex project for when you have more time.

Constraints

  • You can only do each goal once!
  • You must have a significant written component and speaking and/or representing. Adding an artist statement exploring your choices is on way to include a significant piece of writing.
  • There may be a situation where you might want to collaborate with a partner or a small group. These situations must be approved by your teacher, and every member of the group must create individual work within the collab.

Goal #7 - Create Characters

Create major and minor characters and use techniques to show what motivates them and how they change.

You could…

  • Write a short story in the same universe as the text you just finished, inventing new characters.
  • Use a character in the text you just finished and put them in a new scenario (Fan fic!).
  • Turn your text into another genre, like take a novel and turn it into a movie, writing a script, focusing on developing the characters and teaching your audience something new about them.

Goal #8 - Genre

Choose a genre or form for the particular effect they will have on your audience and purpose. Explain what choices you made as a creator to achieve your particular purpose.

You could…

  • Write a short story in the same universe as the text you just finished, using a different genre.
  • Use a character in the text you just finished and put them in a new story.
  • Create your own text in the genre you just read.
  • Turn your text into another genre, like take a novel and turn it into a movie, writing a script or filming a trailer or creating a Netflix landing page.
  • Create propaganda or marketing using the same themes as the text you just read.

Goal #9 - Retell a story from a different point of view

Retell a text or story from a different point of view or perspective. Organize your text to clearly communicate this different point of view.

You could…

  • Retell the text you just read, changing the point of view. For example, you could tell it from the point of view of the antagonist or a minor character.
  • Put the characters from the text you just finished in a different place or time. Design costumes that reflect their personalities. Write an artist statement exploring your choices and explaining why you designed the costumes in the way you did.
  • Write a song or a poem from the point of view of one of the characters from the text you just finished.
  • Change the worldview of your story by setting it in a different cultural context (ie Politically Correct Fairy Tales).

Goal #10 - Share Opinions and Ideas

Create a text that develops your ideas and opinions with evidence.

You could…

  • Write a review of the text you just finished. This could be an article, podcast, YouTube video… the sky’s the limit.
  • Write an essay sharing your ideas about the text you just finished. Use evidence from the text to support your ideas.
  • Create a persuasive speech connected to the topic of your text. Persuade people to do or not do something.
  • Develop a social media campaign (instagram, youtube, tiktok, etc.) exploring a topic related to the text that you have an opinion on (ie. read Crossover and create a media campaign about the importance of youth sports).

Goal #11 - Develop a Theme

Create a fictional text that develops a theme. A theme is your perspective about a topic and is usually a big idea about life.

You could…

  • Write a poem or song on the same theme.
  • Create a graphic novel that uses the same theme.
  • Design a book cover series that explores different themes from the text.
  • Create an album and album cover that have the same theme as the text you just read. You could create your own songs or use other peoples (mix tape).

(We wouldn’t suggest you do this one until you learn about theme.)

Goal #12 - Informational Text

Create a text that includes key information about a topic. Use quotation marks to include direct quotes from a person or text that supports your information. Use a consistent method to give credit for quoted ideas and information such as MLA or APA. You can use bibme.org to format your sources.

You could…

  • Research something you care about about inspired by the text you just finished and create a documentary short on the topic.
  • Interview people who are knowledgeable on a topic related to the text and create a podcast or video.
  • Write a report about a topic inspired by the text you just finished that shares a new point of view or perspective on the topic.

(Don’t forget to keep track of your sources!)
