Organelles:

  •  A subunit of a cell, that has a specific function to the cell.
  • There are many different Organelles.
  • Plants and Animals share many of the same organelles. But also have some organelles that are very different from one another.

Organelle

Description

Function

Sketch

Cell Membrane

-outermost layer in animal cells.

-2nd layer in plant cells.

-“selectively permeable

-controls what enters and leaves the cell

Nucleus

-Holds the cell’s DNA

-It is like the “brain of the cell”

-Directs all of the cell’s activities

Nuclear Membrane

-surrounds/protects the nucleus

-controls what enters and leaves the nucleus

Nucleolus

-Found inside the nucleus.

-Like a meatball in a bowl of spaghetti

-Produces ribosomes

Chromosomes

-Chromosomes are made of DNA

-They contain your genes and determine the traits you get from your parent

Cytoplasm

-Jelly like substance filling the inside of the cell.

The area in-between organelles

 -Protects and supports the organelles

-Holds them in place

(Like fruit in Jell-O.)

Endoplasmic

Reticulum

-A network of tubes and passageways

-Like roadways or tunnels in the cell

 -Transports materials throughout the cell

Ribosomes

-Look like small little dots inside of the cell

-Can be located either in cytoplasm, or on the E.R.

-like protein factories, they produce essential proteins for the cell to use for growth and repair

Golgi Apparatus

-acts like a “post office” for the cell

-looks like a stack of pancakes

-sorts and packages materials for the cell

Mitochondria

-like a power plant for the cell

-Converts food to energy for the cell to use through a process called respiration

 Vacuoles

-Look like balloons in the cell

--Much larger in a plant cell compared to an animal cell

-Store food, water and energy for the cell, and waste from the cell

 Lysosomes

-the trash collectors of the cell

-Plants do not have lysosomes

  -Gets rid of waste

-Breaks down large food molecules

-Repairs damaged and old cell parts

Chloroplasts

-Small green “dots” in the cytoplasm

-Like solar cells

-Perform photosynthesis (turning co2,sunlight & water into food ( in order to provide energy for the cell

Cell Wall

-The outermost structure in a plant cell

-Only found in plant cells

-Made of cellulose

-Helps provide support structure, and protection for the plant
