ATHLETIC CODE OF CONDUCT��Participation in athletic activities is a privilege accompanied by responsibilities and commitment. We encourage students who participate to respect themselves and others, and to uphold high standards of honesty, integrity, and achievement. Athletics enhances educational experiences, building character, pride, reliability, dedication, ambition, and resourcefulness.

General Conduct of our Athletes

  • Student athletes are expected in ALL CLASSES on the day of a contest. A student must be in attendance by the end of fourth period in order to participate in athletic activities that day.
  • The Athletic Coordinator may review and approve participation for unusual circumstances.
  • Any suspended student ( in school or out of school) may not participate in any school event that day or evening (during the duration of the suspension).
  • If you leave the bench during a game or contest to engage in an altercation that is unsportsmanlike there will be specific consequences.

Physicals

  • Student MUST have a physical exam on record at Royce West Leadership Academy before the student may participate in practice of a competition game.
  • Physical is good for 1 academic year: PERIOD -Ex. August 21, 2025-June 1, 2026

Eligibility

  • If a student is failing two or more subjects, he/she becomes ineligible to participate in extracurricular activities and/or athletics for the next grading period.
  • If student-athlete is deemed ineligible, he/she may practice, but not play in any games until grades are official for the following marking period.
  • Students MUST attend school to participate in practices and UIL competitions.
  • NO EXCESSIVE absences will be allowed for students, unless the athletic trainer or physicians orders.

Transportation

  • All students are expected to travel as a team.
  • If a circumstance occurs that requires the student to travel home by a method other than the usual method, a note signed by a parent/guardian is required to be given to the coach.
  • This note should state the date of the event, who is to be responsible for the student, and what mode of transportation will be used.
  • The note should be given to the coach prior to the contest.

Student-Athletes as�Team Members and Representatives of the�Rocyce West, Dallas ISD

  • When on a trip, students are responsible for their behavior including meetings, play assignments and curfews as if in school, from the time the team departs school until the group returns (24 hours a day).
  • Expectations the coach has for all athletes on the team
  • Location and time of all practices and contests (subject to change)
  • Team requirements, i.e. practices, special equipment, out-of-season conditioning
  • Procedure followed should your child be injured during participation
  • Discipline that may result in the reduction or denial of your child's participation

  • For SAFETY reasons, NO parents/guardian will be allowed to approach coaches after practice or games. PLEASE make an appointment to discuss any concerns you may have.

EXPECTATIONS FOR PARENTS

  • The following is a suggested “game plan” for parent conduct:
  • Practices are CLOSED for parents.
  • Remain seated in spectator areas during competition.
  • Do not yell instructions or criticisms to the athletes.
  • Make no derogatory comments to players, other parents, fans, coaches, officials, or administrators.
  • Do not interfere with your child’s coach.
  • Be willing to let the coach be responsible for your child during the duration of the contest. Do not approach the bench or playing area.
  • If necessary, remind those around you of the rules.
  • PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONFRONT A COACH BEFORE OR AFTER A CONTEST. Coaches will be responsible for supervising players at this time as part of their duties.

Student Athlete Possessions

  • No cell phones on the fields, EVER!
  • If the athletes leave their personal possessions and belongings unlocked, or out on the team bench in the locker room facility, they are inviting theft.
  • Athletes are to be discouraged from bringing valuable personal items to school, where they will be left in the locker room facility. Excessive cash, expensive jewelry, and electronics should be left at home!

Risk Factor Related to Playing Sports

  • By the very nature of athletic activity, participants are at risk of physical injury.

  • Athletes must communicate immediately with coaches regarding INJURIES and health issues.
