Violence at home, at school and in the community

  • Violence at home is called domestic violence. This is also called domestic abuse. This is when someone threatens to hurt you, hits you or kicks you.
  • Sometimes you see violence at school when there is bullying or fighting.
  • Violence in the community are things such as gang activity, gang shootings or fighting and illegal drugs being sold and used.

Responding to violent situations

  • There are 5 things to do in a violent situation
  • Be a non-violent role model to others. Walk away when it gets violent.
  • Be calm. Violence only creates more violence.
  • Talk to others about the violent problems around you, and come up with solutions together.
  • Think of non-violent ways to fix a problem.
  • Learn to express your feelings in non-violent ways.
  • You can find help in a violent situation with an adult you can trust or the police.
