Inquiry Question
How does someone who is legally blind learn how to play music and will they ever make it as far as other musicians?
My early music life
When I was 7 or 8 years old I played for a baseball team called the Roxborough Indians and at the end of the year I was told that I was not allowed to play no more because I was legally blind. At that point in my life, I thought that it was all going to be over. About two months after that had happened I decided that I need to find something to do so the first thing I saw was a pair of drum sticks and I played my older brothers drums.
1 year into playing music
After about a year of learning the basics about how to play and basic rhythm, I tried to learn the music and it was just to hard for me so I just listened to the songs and learned the rhythm that way. I actually remember my first song being need you now by lady antebellum. My older brother couldn’t believe that I was actually able to learn how to play because I wouldn’t be able to read the music. When he heard me playing he actually thought I was listening to a drum cover. In the summertime of 2012, my Mom took me to my first concert at the electric factory. During the concert I got to meet the members of smash mouth and got to keep a pair of sticks from vertical horizon. Ever since that day, I was determined to become the first proficient legally blind drummer.
My first band
During History class in my Junior year, I met an awesome guy by the name Benjamin Hahn. I heard him listening to green day and we started talking about music and how it is a big part in both of our lives. As time went on he listened to me play after school one day and asked me if I would want to play in a show with him and I thought to myself that this is not happening. I told him that I would think about and a few days later I decided to take him up on his offer and I played with him in his band Zero Friends until June of 2019.
Making of Zero 2 Hero
Zero 2 hero is a band made up of 2 students Me (Jimmy) on drums and the guitarist/singer (Benjamin Hahn). Back when I first wanted to start the capstone I thought that we wouldn’t get really anywhere as fast as we did. Here is a video of when we had been playing for 10 weeks.
