Guided learning proposal

2 of 18

Situation:

  • Heritage spaces are at risk of being demolished for new buildings and infrastructure.
  • Several reports have been seen in the papers about shops with rich heritage closing down

3 of 18

Issue:

  1. While there is efforts to try and encourage people to interested our heritage, youths views towards heritage have not changed much
  2. With high commitments in CCA and school, most youths do not have time to attend heritage events

4 of 18

To solve this, we need to find out:

What should we do to get youths to care our heritage?

Goal of this project!

Research question

  1. How people of certain races/backgrounds respond to learning about ICH of other races?
  2. How do people of different interest levels react and respond to activities related to ICH?
  3. What were people’s responses to the activities?
  4. What aspects of the activities were interesting or not interesting?
  5. Why were they interested in it?
  6. What kind of format of the activity do they like?
  7. Do they find that this ICH is worth preserving? If not, what other place of heritage or ICH do they want to see it being protected?

Key takeaways from stakeholders

  1. Arousing curiosity in the craft/ practice
  2. Important to build relationship with the stakeholder before asking them for help.
  3. Importance of being very genuine with the interest in the craft
  4. Incorporating elements such as the arts with heritage boosts the programme
  5. Content produced should be relatable to the audience

To find out how to encourage youths to be passionate in heritage requires long-term testing and talking to more stakeholders

Ideas

Haw Par Villa’s history

    • Sharing about the history and people’s memories of Haw Par Villa
    • Creation of a website on Haw Par Villa’s history

Reason decided to change project due to prior commitments and need more time to understand the root of the issue

How do you make a sharing session a two-way session?

12 of 18

Sharing about the history and people’s memories of Haw Par Villa

  1. Sharing with participants about the history of Haw Par Villa
  2. Share what Haw Par Villa means to interns/ stakeholders/me
  3. Discussion about the meaning behind the site

Interviewed someone who worked in Haw Par Villa in the 1990s

13 of 18

How this will be carried out

  1. Ask participants to share about what is their impression of Haw Par Villa
  2. Share with participants a brief background of Haw Par Villa, from time to time, interns/stakeholder/ me will share about my experience of memories at Haw Par Villa
  3. Break out room where participants can share their insights, speaker will be allocated to a break out room for participants to ask questions and speak deeper the site’s history and impact on the person (subject to number of participants)
  4. Participants write on a miroboard what Haw Par Villa means to them

14 of 18

Logistics

  1. Interns/ person who worked at Haw Par Villa
  2. Volunteers
    1. Technical support
    2. Publicity (email and website)
    3. Administration (registration and feedback form)
    4. Facilitator in rooms*
  3. Powerpoint slides
  4. Microsoft teams channel
  5. Miroboard

Publicity and administration may double as facilitator on that day

Benefits

Challenges

  1. Personal interaction with speakers and participants instead of placing spotlight on the speaker, chance to build connections with people
  2. Have a personal touch to the sharings that have been given by participants
  3. Assist EOC students who do not know what place to pick for photo journal
  4. Readily available resources to contact for the event, does not require new relationships to be built
  1. Participants may just want to listen in and not have anything to input
  2. Not enough participants to join the talk
  3. One participant dominates the discussion, preventing the rest from speaking
  4. Very tedious to break participants into groups and ensure everyone has interacted with people involved
  5. interns/ stakeholders not available to share
  6. Session may be very long, may have to break into 2 sessions
