Horace Pippen was a self taught American artist who painted a range of subject matters. When he was a young boy, Pippen won an art contest and got his first box of crayons and a watercolor set. This was very exciting for him.

Pippin was a folk artist, which means he had no formal art training. He used bright colors, flat shapes, and straight lines. He liked to paint ordinary people doing everyday things.

He would often paint families together inside their home, playing games or enjoying a meal. His paintings remind the viewer of the basic comforts of home and family.

Along with everyday moments, Pippen would also create paintings that showed family celebrations, such as birthdays and holidays.
