Jupyter Notebooks

What are cells?

In Jupyter, you can run, edit, and insert individual code chunks separately through cells! The two types of cells we’ll use are:

Code cells:

• Includes your Python code
• Can be run to show output or test validation

Markdown cells:

• Includes blocks of text
• Can include formatting options (bolding, size)
• Can be run to display written text seamlessly within the notebook

Scope of cells

“Do variables carry over from one cell to another?”

Yes! But only if the previous cell was run first, even out of order.

• Running cell 1 before cell 2 results in an error because a does not yet exist!
• Running cell 1 after cell 2 successfully prints 1, even though cell 2 exists after cell 1.

Notebook�Shortcuts

With cell selected:

• a = add cell above
• b = add cell below
• dd (quickly) = delete cell
• shift + enter = run cell 💫
• z = undo delete cell
• m = convert to markdown cell
• y = convert to code cell
