VIDEO - Aquaculture and You (UW SEAGRANT)

TASK 1 - When you enter the room today, you may get started set-up with your testing equpment and your P5 clock buddy. We will assign tanks and then start our testing. You will log your data in the electronic log accessible in the icon menu above. When you are done, sit with your partner and get reading for the mapping activity. (60min)

TASK 2 - Obtain this mapping aquaculture handouts from your instructor: Mapping Aquaculture. You will need to cut them out neatly and past them. HINT, use the back of the note pages. (5min) Using the notes you just took, indicate on each map with the color pencils, if applicable, for the major historical aquaculture and fish areas from Friday and Monday's lecture on the History of Aquaculture. (30min)

TASK 3 - Using your map, pick any 1 country but each must be on a different continent, color them on the map and find out how much fish their people eat. Next, color the US and find out how much fish we eat. A simple Google Search will help you find this information. (15min)

TASK 4: Write a reflection on why you think our fish consumption is different than the other countries you r peers chose. Use complete sentences. (5min)

TASK 1 - You picked a country yesterday on the map and the presentation link is posted here. Complete the criteria and expectations listing in the presentation. (25min)

TASK 2 - Write a reflection in your notebook on why you think our (US) fish consumption is different than the other countries your peers chose. Use complete sentences. (10min)

TASK 3 - Title a page in your notebook: What Careers are Available in Aquaculture? Go back to this website's home page and scroll down until you see the menu icon in the left margin that says "Careers". Click on that and scroll down to where you see the icon for "Ag Career Explorer". In that menu, you can visit various career pathways. Aquaculture careers will be listed under "Animal Systems" and in the "Environmental/Natural Resource Systems". Please choose ONE career that interests you to report back to the instructor on Tuesday. Write the information about this career on the first page of your Careers Heading in your notebook.

TASK 1 - When you enter today, complete a water test with your partner and enter that data.

TASK 2 - Today we are going to virtually visit Growing Power Inc. Open this website for Growing Power Inc. Read through the brief article explaining aquaponics at their facility. Next, watch Will Allen's aquaponics system in action. Next, your instructor will facilitate a class discussion to gather ideas about how we can do this more at OFHS. Take a sticky note from the supply totes on your tables. Write down why our class needs to farm more fish in aquaponic systems. Once you are done writing, share your response with your elbow partner. Once that task is down. The instructor will ask for one person from each table to share their thoughts with the class. When you are done, stick it to the inside cover of your notebook and the instructor will give you a stamp on your response.

TASK 3 - HOMEWORK - Water quality is important for fish as well as plants. Please read the following reading passage. In your notebooks, for each title please leave a page of space for your notes from reading and your teacher's lecture. (overview of fish requirements, dissolved solids, pH, organic matter, gass’s, salinity, temperature, total alkalinity and hardness, and dissolved oxygen). They can be Front and back to save space.

TASK 1 - Open this reading on your device. Please copy down the chart that contains the chemical and suggested value (ppm) for each of those chemicals on the "Overview of Fish Requirements" page of your notebook.

TASK 2: When task 1 is complete, find a news article online that talks about water quality killing fish in aquaculture farms or rivers or lakes. Share a link to this article on this shared document. Write down 2 statements or opinions that your have after reading.
