What’s on tap for AY2016–17 (1/2)

  • Some pressure to move 106 to three credits, though many colleges prefer four. No changes underway at this time.
  • Development of 108 approaches without service learning / community engagement.
  • Evaluation, possible revision of syllabus approach structure (number, purpose, workload).
  • Partnerships with Writing Lab to diversify ways we serve students, improve our facilities.

Getting the semester started

  • Complete ICP (Initial Course Participation)
    • Faculty tab > Faculty Tools
    • US Department of Education mandate for Financial Aid
  • Do not sign students into your class!
    • English 106 & 108 course limits are 20; 106I is 15.
    • 1st week: students drop/add through MyPurdue.
    • 2nd week: students may NOT add an ICaP class
      • Exception: Students on your roster who attended the 1st week

Cancelling or moving classes

Three steps:

    • Let your students know by website or email;
    • Call or email Joy Kane:�765-494-3730 or jakane@purdue.edu;
    • Post official form on your classroom door�(or ask us to help).

Tell us! We need this info for emergencies, lost students, etc.

Conferences and holidays

  • If you conference on Monday, please email your Monday conference this weekend, explain how conferencing works, and plan for the first day as you see fit.
  • On weeks with holidays, please don’t cancel all conferences that week because of holidays. (Same as weeks when you need to cancel a conference or classroom day for sickness or other issues.)

Midterm grade policies

  • University policy states: “Between the beginning of the fifth week and the end of the seventh week, all students enrolled in 10000-29999 level and those approved for foundational courses shall be provided graded feedback by their faculty. These grades will not become part of the permanent record.”
  • Make sure you have provided graded feedback to your students by the end of the seventh week.
  • You do not need to calculate a midterm grade for them.
  • If you use portfolios, you will need to provide an estimated grade, but this grade is not part of students’ permanent records.
  • Goal: ensure students understand their progress in time to withdraw from the course or get help if they need it.
