SERVICE-LEARNING IN SPAIN

    • The discovery in Spain of service-learning is relatively recent. We began to speak of service-learning in 2003-2004, although gesture of solidarity among education centres and social services have a long tradition in our country.

    • We can list some places where these initiatives are carried out: primary, secondary and polytechnic schools; social services; movements and leisure time activities of group of youth education; universities; special schools; social integration of adults at risk of exclusion…

Development Criteria:

- From regional to national level.

- Several and diverse education and social agents in every regional initiative.

- Exchange of resources, and knowledge among different initiatives

- Involve public administrations in different stages and areas of responsibility.

SPANISH SERVICE-LEARNING NETWORK

  • The Spanish Service-Learning Network (REDAPS) is a non-profitable association whose mission is to extend service-learning; promote collaboration among territorial groups and represent them in front of other institutions

  • It was created on November 3th, 2010 in Portugalete (Basque Country).

SPANISH SERVICE-LEARNING NETWORK

  • The network is made up of 17 territorial groups in 17 Autonomous Communities (regions). The Territorial Groups are those that guarantee the entry of new members into the Network.
  • These groups aim to promote the development of service-learning in their territories and are made up of people and institutions of diverse origins: educational centres, teacher training centres, social services, universities and other local initiatives.

SERVICE-LEARNING AWARDS

  • The Service-Learning Awards is a joint initiative between REDAPS and the Grupo Edebé publishing company.
  • The objectives are:
  • Apreciate the work of educators, educational centres and social services that promote service-learning.
  • Give voice to children and committed young people, in particular those with fewer social opportunities.
  • Enlarge this educational methodology.

  • Last course, 358 projects were submitted.
  • These projects involved more than 600 education centres and social services, in which 36.396 children and young people took part.
  • 22 awards were granted by the driving organitations, collaborating companies and institutions.

OUR RIVER NEEDS YOU�Service-Learning Award in Pre-school and Primary Education

Motivated by the piece of news about our river being polluted by the disposal of wastewater, primary school children carried out a public awareness campaign to change the habits of their neighbours.

Organizing marches, attracting the attention of the media and putting pressure on the public powers, they’ve managed to commit the Junta de Andalucía to building a wastewater treatment plant in the town.

VIRTUAL LIBRARY�Prize for the Promotion of Reading

Primary school children, motivated by not being able to use the school library during the COVID-19 pandemic, have put forward the idea of a virtual library by writing and illustrating tales and stories.

MY STREETS HAVE TRADES�Gender Equity Award

Children from 3 to 6 years old, along with their families, look into and analyse the unequal gender distribution of street names dedicated to professions amongst men and women.

For this reason, they presented a proposal to the district board and the neighbourhood community to turn the name of a street into "Woman Writers Street".

FURRY FRIENDS�City of Alcalá de Henares Service-Learning Award for the design of a service-learning project

The children carried out different tasks of cleaning and caring for animals as well as different face-to-face actions and through social networks to raise public awareness about reducing stray animals and animal abuse, caring for the environment, encouraging adoption and volunteering in this area.

SERVICE-LEARNING IN OUR SCHOOL

  • In our school, Sagrado Corazón de Pamplona (Navarra), we began working with this methodology five years ago.
  • Our goal is to teach boys and girls how to become committed to the society in which they live.
  • We carry out learning and service projects in all educational stages.
  • Some of our projects have been awarded at the local and state level (REDAPS Awards)

PAMPLONA, OPEN CITY

High School students actively collaborate with groups of migrant teenagers by participating in leisure activities, recommended peer relationships and sharing their experience together with other young people and professionals from social and educational organitations.

COLECAMINOS

  • Primary school children took part in the creation of two walking routes to get to school safely.
  • They carried out numerous activities such as a study of children travel habits and road safety.
  • This project helped improve the safety of our children to get to school on foot.

IN CONCLUSION…

The ultimate aim of education is to train competent citizens capable of changing the world.
