Bike friendly towns in Portugal

Introduction

→ In our presentation, we are going to talk about the using of bikes in our daily life.

Braga Ciclável

“Braga Ciclável” is a portuguese project that gives free monthly cycling classes to children and teenagers that don't know how to ride a bike. They have also created a comic book/BD that has the goal to promote the cycling activity and the sustainable activity in our city.

U-bike Portugal project

→ The U-biked Portugal project provides actions to encourage the adoption of more sustainable standards in Portuguese communities. With a focus on bicycles, in particularly the electric one, the project focuses mainly on the young strata of the population, such as higher education students, and expands throughout the academic community in general.

“Bike Atitude” is another portuguese project that helps elementary school kids from social neighborhoods with free trial bike weekly lessons and other physical activities.

Ciclismo vai à escola

“Ciclismo vai à escola” is a project that teaches children to learn how to ride a bike.

This project helped to reduce from 44 % children that didn´t know how to ride a bike to only 14%.

Also in our capital city(Lisbon) we have electric bicycles, very popular with tourists for city tours. We also have a food delivery company(Takeaway.com) that only uses electric bicycles.

RTE, a Portuguese company based in Vila Nova de Gaia, is the largest bicycle assembly plant in Europe. It produces about 1.2 million units per year. About 95% are exported to other European countries, such as France, Spain, Germany and Poland.

Portugal was the largest European producer of bicycles in 2020, by manufacturing 2.7 million units, however, we don't see many bicycles on our roads. This means of transport was only used in about 0.4% of the trips made in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto.

In Portugal, there are more and more cycle paths. Along the coast, in natural parks and forests, and in cities, there are many signposted routes, as well as support areas and specific stores for users.

The beautiful trails

And since we are talking about bicycles, nothing better than talking about the beautiful trails of our country. Portugal is recognized as having one of the best trails in Europe, or even in the world. For example we have the Great BTT crossing of the Historical Villages of Portugal, where we can see the beauty of the villages of our country.
