General Overview

  • There are 10 master’s degrees related to translation in Portugal;

  • Most degrees are offered in the North and Coast of Portugal;

  • These degrees have a duration of 2 years;

  • Students can choose to finish them with either:
    • A dissertation; Project Work; or an Intership.

Master’s in Translation and Multilanguage Communication�University of Minho

  • The university has collaboration protocols with national and international companies, organisms, and partner universities. This allows students to partake in national or international internships in, for example, companies;

  • This master’s helps students develop skills in multimedia and multilanguage translation and acquire theoretical and technical skills in multiple areas, such as translation, subtitling, terminology, and more;

  • Students can choose to work with two of these languages: German, Chinese, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese and Russian;

  • Tuition Fees (Annually): National Students - 1250€ / International Students - 2000€;

  • Career Prospects:
    • Students can work in translation and publishing companies as translators or editors;
    • They can work in tourism with linguistic interfaces;
    • Some have also found jobs in business, publishing companies, and cultural industries.

Master’s in Translation and Language Services�Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Porto (FLUP)

  • This faculty is a member of the European Master’s in Translation (EMT) Network since 2009. This Network’s main goal is to improve the quality of translator training to enhance the labor market integration of young professionals. Being a member of the EMT Network has advantages:
    • Maintaining close relationships with international universities, which facilitates student and teacher mobility and gives students priority access to traineeships with European institutions through ERASMUS agréments;
    • Having priority with the DGT’s Visiting Translators Scheme. This is a program where DGT staff who know or are learning one of the EU’s official languages can be sent to a university in a country where the language is spoken.

  • This course aims to offer a theoretical background in Translation Theory and Intercultural Communication and practical training in technology for professional translation, such as Trados or memoQ;

  • Students can choose to specialize in either Specialized Translation or Translation and Linguistic Services. They must also choose which languages to work with from Portuguese, German, Spanish, French, English, Chinese, Italian, Japanese and Russian;

  • Tuition Fees (Annually):
    • National Students – 1250€ / International Students – 4000€.

  • Career Prospects:
    • Professional translation, Specialized Translation, Localization, Revision, Editing, Subtitling, and Technical communication.

  • This course allows students to acquire theoretical, methodological and technical knowledge in translation studies and the practices of translation;

  • It gives students the opportunity to create investigation projects in specific areas such as literary, pragmatic, scientific or technical translation;

  • Students must choose a language to work with from German, French, or English;

  • Tution Fees (Annually): National student - 1200€ / International Student – 2500€.
  • This degree focuses on students who are interested in deepening their reflections around translation and in developing skills across four fields: juridical, economic, literary, and audiovisual;

  • The private Faculty has a partnership with Memsource which grants students free access to the translation tool;

  • Tuition Fees: 1st Year – 4200€ / 2nd Year – 3180€;

  • Students can expect to work in translation, business relations, international relations, and government relations.
  • FLUL is also a member of the EMT Network;

  • This degree allows students to develop fundamental scientific, technical, and technological skills;

  • It gives students the opportunity to practice translation in different specialized environments, such as audiovisual translation;
