Colleges use AP art scores to award college credit or grant advanced placement, allowing students to skip introductory courses, though the specific policy varies by institution. Students should check individual college websites for their AP credit policies, as the College Board recommends credit for scores of 3, 4, or 5. For AP Art and Design, this credit is based on a submitted portfolio of work.
How AP Art Scores Work
A high enough score can fulfill graduation requirements, potentially allowing a student to graduate early.
Students may be able to skip introductory courses and enroll in higher-level classes as a freshman.
AP Art and Design exams require a submitted portfolio of artwork, and this portfolio is reviewed for credit and placement.
How Colleges Determine Policies
Each college sets its own policies for AP credit and placement, which can differ significantly.
A score of 3 (qualified) or higher is generally considered acceptable for credit, with higher scores (4 or 5) often being more beneficial.
Credit can apply to general requirements, major-specific requirements, or elective courses, depending on the college's policies.
