SETTING

Agency Name: Sexual Assault Awareness

Target Population: SLU students, graduate students, faculty, and SLU employees

Description of Services: Sexual Misconduct and Prevention Resources/Support, Bystander Intervention Education, Connection to community services (The Women’s Safe House).

Mission: The agency’s main goal is to raise awareness of sexual assault happening on SLU’s campus.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Agency-Identified Goal: To raise and increase awareness and prevention of sexual assault in students on Saint Louis University’s campus

SMART Objectives:

  1. By November 3, 2020, one week after posting the promotional video on instagram, at least 75 views will be from SLU students.
  2. By November 24, 2020, we will donate at least 10 sexual assault kits to The Women’s Safe House in St. Louis.
  3. Prior to our video being posted on October 27, 2020, Swati and Jodi will give approval regarding the efficacy of our promotional video.

Rationale: Our goal is to raise awareness regarding resources available for individuals on campus who are victims of sexual assault or know someone who is. 1 in 5 women and more than 6% of men are sexually assaulted during their time in college (Kulikowski, 2012).

HP2030 Topic & Objective:

Topic: violence Prevention - Injury and Violence Prevention Workgroup

Objective: Reduce adolescent sexual violence by anyone- IVP-17

Activities: We created a promotional video for SLU rec and wellness center increasing awareness, prevention, and resources about sexual assault for student’s on SLU’s campus. We created 3 kits to donate to the Women’s Safe House in St. Louis for sexual assault survivors

PROJECT OUTCOMES

Methods: In order to evaluate the efficiency of our project, we will be following the amount of views that accumulate on our video as well as feedback from our site coordinators. We will be reaching out to the official SLU instagram to try to get them to repost it as well.

SMART Objective 1: not met

Outcome: Unexpected barriers occurred that prevented the video from being posted on Instagram.

SMART Objective 2: met

Outcome: We were able to get money from the IPE fund to create our kits (could not make 10, they were too expensive), but due to COVID-19 restrictions, The Women’s Safe House isn’t accepting donations at this time.

SMART Objective 3: partially met Outcome: We had received approval from Jodi and Swati about our promotional video, but we were unable to post it due to unforeseen circumstances.

REFLECTION

  • Understanding the target population and how to assess their needs.
  • As healthcare students, we recognize the importance of our work in population health, even when it appears that our actions may be futile.
  • Met with site coordinators in order to acknowledge their wants and needs and how to spread their message.
  • Our target population consisted of SLU students and staff, which made it easier for us to engage with.
  • Finished the class with a deepened understand of sexual assault awareness and prevention.

FUTURE ACTIONS

  • As we met with this organization entirely online, this can be used as a baseline to improve upon.
  • Refer students to our video every so often so they are reminded of the information
  • Increase awareness through sharing the video on social media, email links, or on websites.
  • Donate survival kits which the Rec Center can use to distribute to those in need
