The More You Know

Staying on top of the following areas and working alongside your child will ensure we all have a successful year. ☺

Please help me with my goal to teach them the ever important life skills of: accountability, responsibility, organization, commitment, dedication/follow through, and integrity.

  • ATTENDANCE / COMMUNICATION
  • GRADING POLICY
  • ACADEMICS
  • DEMERITS
  • SOCIAL MEDIA
  • PERFORMANCE/EVENT PICKUP
  • COMMUNICATE / CHECK IN
  • WE ARE A TEAM

19 of 40

ATTENDANCE REMINDERS

  • Members will arrive on time to events/practices and stay until dismissed by the director.
  • ALL TEAM FUNCTIONS ARE MANDATORY (this includes team building functions, community service, & fundraisers)
  • Advance notification if there is a scheduling conflict must be received 2 weeks prior in order to be considered. Performance/Event Conflict Form
  • If you are absent for ½ of the school day or more on a performance day you are NOT permitted to participate per district rules.
  • Additional Dance Clinics & Dance Opportunities are Optional (Example: Blue Belle Clinics or Studio information sent out)

20 of 40

COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS

  • Members should notify their officer of any absences or email Coach Harris directly.
  • We should NOT have to reach out to you! It is the member’s responsibility to communicate when they are sick or emergencies arise.
  • Parents MUST notify Coach Harris of any absences (both class time and before/after school practices).

Options:

    • Send an email explanation with reason for absence
    • If sending a note into attendance clerk I must receive a copy. Ask for a copy to be made and delivered to my box.
  1. Failure of notification will result in enforcement of the demerit system. (EMAIL ME OR SEND IN NOTE) See HANDBOOK

21 of 40

COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS

  • Appointments: Notification does not eliminate the need for a doctor’s note if a medical appointment transpired during class time or practice.
  • PLEASE ATTEMPT TO SCHEDULE APPOINTMENTS ON DAYS WE DO NOT HAVE PRACTICE/PERFORMANCES (MON, THURS, FRI)
  • PLEASE INCLUDE “THE WHY” WHEN NOTIFYING ME OF ABSENCE OR CONFLICT.
  • Notification is only needed when absent from the Silver Star class period or team practice. I do not need an email or note for other times of the school day.

22 of 40

GRADING POLICY

  • Outlined on the Silver Star website.
  • Grading Policy Link
  • Note: Dance is strictly a participation based class. Participation grades cannot be earned if a member is not present for class. Notifications directly to the director through email or written notes must be received in order to be exempted from the daily participation grade.
    • You will see “M” for missing which calculates as a zero or a grade deduction if your child was absent during class and I did not receive notification.
    • Participation grades are calculated weekly. If you ever see less than 100 (80, 60, 40, 20). This means there is a zero being calculated for an unexcused absence from class. Again, students cannot earn a grade if they are NOT there to participate and I have no knowledge of their whereabouts.

23 of 40

ACADEMICS

  • Strive for A’s & B’s (Yes this is achievable!)
  • Weekly grade check sheets
    • Electronic grades checks are due every Monday.
    • Have your child share their grade check with you too.
    • Absence does not excuse this assignment/task
  • Proof of progress is due on Friday for all missing and failing grades.
  • Go to Tutorials (Grade level or coordinate with teacher)
  • Time management
  • If ever failing, they will be required to attend tutorials & turn a tutorial log.
  • In my experience a dancer will have a C or lower for the following reasons
    • Missing Homework, Tests, or Projects
    • Failed Tests/Assignments that are not corrected
    • Zeros for On time performance grades (Not turning in work on due date)

24 of 40

EVENT PICK-UP

  • Imperative that your child be picked up immediately after performances, practices, or any Silver Star event
  • Members not picked up within 15 minutes of dismissal. (See Handbook) may result in the student losing the privilege of participation in the next performance or demerits may be issued.

25 of 40

FOOTBALL GAMES

  • Dismissal:
    • All Parents will pick up at the parking lot below football field (back of school/bus loop) immediately following the second performance.
    • Parents not present at games please be aware of the time and work out a communication system with your child so you are not LATE picking up.
      • For example: Leaving your house after our last performance is over is NOT acceptable.
    • Football Game Procedures Click Here

26 of 40

DEMERITS

  • Refer to Handbook for guidelines (pg 11)
  • Again, we are teaching accountability. Demerits are our organization’s accountability and consequence system.
  • Merit
    • A way to offset a demerit
    • Merit sheet must be filled out & turned in
    • Note: Community Service off-campus must be approved through the director
  • Some Minor offenses (Level 1) will be handled immediately (i.e. tardiness, wrong attire, unprepared). These are still demerits but we call them “Cougars” and they are removed immediately.

27 of 40

SOCIAL MEDIA

  • MAJOR PROBLEMS CAUSED EACH YEAR.
  • Any communication appearing on the Internet is public domain, even if it is marked private.
  • Members are responsible for their personal websites and postings, as well as posting from or on other students’ websites.
  • Any such incident will result in review by the principal and may lead to probation or dismissal from the dance team.
  • Please thoroughly review this section of the handbook (Digital Citizenship).
  • The majority of our issues are with TikTok. Members are posting videos with songs that have profanity. This is a violation of the handbook.
  • Violating Digital Citizenship Guidelines = 5 demerits = Benched from a performance

28 of 40

SOCIAL MEDIA

  • Please monitor your child’s social media!
  • Officers and myself do monitor
  • Red flag if an officer or Silver Star is blocked.
  • Tiktok, Ask.fm, Ask Me Anything, Instagram, Twitter, Twitch, Snapchat, Tumblr, Flickr, Vine, Kik, Facebook, Etc.
  • https://www.commonsensemedia.org/parents-ultimate-guides
  • MEMBERS ARE PROHIBITED FROM CREATING ANY SOCIAL MEDIA PORTRAYING/ REPRESENTING/ IMPLYING IT IS AN OFFICIAL LISD SITE OR OFFICIAL SILVER STAR PAGE/SITE.

TIKTOK (age 16+)

30 of 40

SnapChat

  • This is being used to post inappropriate videos or pictures.
  • How it works: A user sends a video to followers and then it deletes after a few seconds.
  • The Catch: A video/picture can be saved by a recipient with a screen shot. The original sender is notified when a screen shot is done, but the damage is done at that point.

31 of 40

Instagram

  • Probably the most popular form to use. Video & photo sharing app used to socialize.
  • You may find content you don’t like, but doesn’t violate the community guidelines. If that happens, you can unfollow or block the person who posted it, and if there's something you don't like in a comment on one of your posts, you can delete that comment.
  • Lots of bad language is being posted (abb. Counts!)

32 of 40

Ask.fm

  • This is being used as a way to verbally bash another person or say inappropriate things without anyone knowing who said it.
  • Ask.fm allows users to post things anonymously.
  • The Catch!!!!! There is an option under settings to Turn OFF this setting which forces anyone who posts anything with your account to give their name before it will accept it. Also “questions” don’t actually post unless you answer.
  • I am asking that either Silver Stars do not have these accounts or if they do they must turn off anonymous.

FREQUENT CHECK-IN

  • Please communicate and check-in with your child regularly. If they are paying attention they should know what is going on and be able to answer your questions.
    • Please avoid emailing me questions until you have asked your Silver Star first.
  • Make sure you have coordinated with your child on transportation, due dates, practices, events, etc.
    • I will tell them often that they need to be reminding you of things. ☺
    • Please remember that they are still learning organizational and responsibility skills and will need your help at times.
    • If you know your child struggles with this please begin helping them to find a system that will work. If you need help or suggestions please let me know.

34 of 40

FREQUENT CHECK-IN

  • Fun Fact (we are dealing with MS children whose brains are currently under remodeling…seriously)

Venting: Please remember that not everyday will be a perfect day and sometimes your child just needs to vent. Please refrain from jumping to conclusions and adding to their emotions. They often times just need someone to listen to them. If you are concerned wait until the next day and ask them how they are feeling about the situation before going on the attack. Often times after 24 hours have past it won’t even be a big deal anymore.

  • Self Advocating:
    • Please also help me by encouraging your child to come speak to me when they are having problems, issues, or have questions.
    • As much as we want to intervene as parents sometimes it is not for the best and detrimental to their learning and growing. Help them learn to self advocate.

Directors + Parents = Team

  • It takes a village! We are a team.
  • Please be mindful of the time of day you email me if needing an immediate response. Once I leave school for the day I often do not check emails until the following morning.
  • Urgent issue please contact the officer, and they will get a hold of me to let me know I need to contact you.

36 of 40

Directors + Parents = Team

  • Please contact me if there are ever any questions/ concerns/ issues.
    • I can’t help or fix things when I am not given an opportunity or am unaware of an issue.

37 of 40

Uniforms

  • $150 to replace
  • School property and will be turned in at the end of the year
  • Skirts went home today. Please ensure uniforms are hung or neatly kept in a drawer. Safe place.
  • Cleaning: You may hand wash with a mild detergent such as woolite, baby detergent. Use Oxiclean to get dirt off of the zipper, leotard neck/chest, and skirt band. Be aware that we don’t want the navy to bleed onto the white!

NEVER put in washing machine or dryer!

Odds and Ends

  • Dance Team does not need to dress out until Monday.
