Check for Understanding

  • Why is biodiversity valuable to humans?

Biodiversity is one of Earth’s greatest greatest natural resources. Species of many kinds have provided us with foods , industrial products, and medicines.

  • Why is biodiversity worth preserving?

Biodiversity is worth preserving because it is valuable to humans.

  • List 4 different ways in which humans are decreasing biodiversity.

Altering habitats, extinction, introducing toxic compounds into food webs, and introducing foreign species to a new environment

  • What is the current focus of conservation biologists worldwide?

Biologists are focusing on protecting entire ecosystems as well as a single species. This will ensure that the natural habitats and the interactions of many different species are preserved at the same time.

Transitions Questions

  • What is a natural resource? Give Examples.

A natural resource any part of the natural environment, created by nature they are considered more valuable considering they are more scarce, they are used by humans for their necessities . For example soil, water, crops, etc.

  • What is the difference between an unnatural and natural resource?

An unnatural resource is any unnatural environment used and made by humans for their benefits. For example processed foods, plastic, paper, etc. The difference between them is that natural resources are the base of unnatural resources meaning that they are made of them. Natural resources are more valuable too because they are all limited.

  • What is pollution? Give Examples?

Pollution is the act or process of polluting or the state of being polluted, especially the contamination of soil, water, or the atmosphere by the discharge of harmful substances.

Examples: -Garbage

-Toxic Waste

-Gases

  • What is the Ozone Layer? Why is it getting thinner?

The ozone layer is a layer in the earths earths atmosphere that absorbs most of the suns UV radiation. The reason that the Ozone Layer is getting thinner is due to CFCs. This gas goes up into the ozone layer and destroys it by layers.

  • Why is nitrogen bad for the environment?

Nitrogen is bad for the environment because it in excess in our atmosphere. This is due to so much pollution.

  • What is the Greenhouse Effect?

The Greenhouse Effect is caused when gases in the atmosphere trap heat, which prevents them from escaping into space. This causes global warming.

Desk:

  • Nonrenewable - Metal that is most likely iron

- Fossil Fuel/ Gasoline

- Certain gases in the atmosphere

  • Renewable -Wood

-Food: crops/farms

Pollution is the contamination of air, water,or earth by harmful or potentially

harmful substances.

Land Pollution

Causes : -degenerative actions

-misuse of land

-land conversion

-soil pollution

-inefficient use of land

Consequences: -animal extinction

-effects on biodiversity

-effects on climate

-biomagnification

Possible Solutions:Some solutions to land pollutions might be to recycle, reusing materials, and also to reduce the use of non-biodegradable materials.

Air Pollution

Causes: -mobile sources

-methane

-smoke

-landfills

-stationary sources

Consequences: -the thinning of the ozone layer

-volcanic eruptions

-wind erosion

-radon expulsion

Possible Solutions:Some solutions to air pollution might be to buy a vehicle that runs solar powered instead of gasoline.

Water Pollution

Causes: -agriculture

-industries

-sanitary wastes

-solid wastes

-natural reasons

-urbanization

Consequences: -human health

-aquatic life

-extinction

Possible Solutions:Some solutions to water pollution might be to dispose of our trash in a proper manner rather than tossing it in a natural body of water.
