Baptism

Baptism is a Christian rite of passage, tradition, and admission to the church. Baptism, at its simplest, is considered to be a rebirth of the one receiving the sacrament; a cleansing of sin.

John was baptising in ”Bethany beyond the Jordan” . Generally considered to be the town of Bethany, also called Bethabara in Perea, on the eastern bank of the Jordan river, near Jericho.

About

St John

John the Baptist was Jesus' cousin, and he baptized Jesus in the Jordan River. John led a simple life. He was only concerned with the Kingdom of God and always spoke of love and truth. He is a model of how to live a life in Christ.

Saint John was deemed as the patron saint of love, loyalty, friendships and authors. He and Peter were the only two apostles sent by Jesus to prepare the final Passover meal which was the last meal for Jesus.

Water

Water is a central symbol in the baptism, representing purification, renewal, and spiritual cleansing.

Cross

Most Christians view the cross as a symbol of christianity. When the sign of the cross is made over a child during baptism it invokes protection from God.

Dove

The dove is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. When Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist the heavens were opened and God spoke.

In the Bible, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. As Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens opened, and the Holy Spirit descended on him like a dove. God spoke from heaven, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
