4 Year College Admission Requirements

  • Many colleges require students to complete a required pattern of courses in order to apply. CSU and UC systems call this pattern of courses “a-g courses.

  • Colleges may also require supplemental information and records such as test scores, essays, recommendations, activity lists and/or transcripts.

9

“a-g Courses”

UC/CSU college admissions requirements..

Note: Studies show that the academic success rate is higher for students planning to transfer from a community college to a four year school, who have completed this pattern of classes.

Note: Any dual enrollment or college classes (IVC coursework) should be listed in the college coursework section of your college applications.

4 Year College:

Creating Your Application List

11

It is important to create a well-balanced application list in order to ensure a more positive outcome. If you are applying to 4 year colleges, be sure to include:

Dream/Reach

Colleges

Safety

Colleges

Match/Target

Colleges

Your academic credentials fall on the lower end, or even below the school's average range for the cohort of students accepted the previous year. Ivy League schools are “reach schools” for everyone. More selective UC and CSU campuses may also be “reach”.

Your academic credentials fall well within the school's average range for the most recently accepted class. No guarantees, however a 25% or higher chance of admission is reasonable to expect.

Your academic credentials (grades, number of courses, test scores, etc. ) exceed the school's range for the average first-year student. Reasonably high (90-100%) chance of admission. Ensure these are schools you would actually attend if you add them to your list. Community colleges are excellent safety school options!

12 of 47

Selecting a “Best Fit School”

12

  • It is not recommended to apply to college just for the name, ranking, or to “see if I get in”.

  • The process of applying to too many colleges can be expensive and time consuming. Focus on applying to schools that you would actually attend.

  • Consider: tuition and fees, selectivity, campus size, location, class size, campus life, majors…

  • Research a variety of options including Cal States, UCs, Community Colleges, Private and Out of State

  • Visit different campuses and/or meet with college admission reps at WHS. Attend rep visits for schools you are NOT familiar with to expand your college options.

Receiving a D or F in the Senior year can jeopardize a student’s admission regardless of if the course is required for admission!

If a student’s grades are significantly lower in the 12th grade, their admission status may be impacted.

After receiving their college acceptances, Seniors can sit back, relax and head to the beach instead of class in the second semester.
