Car - App Freight Car Repairer

Inspecting, repairing and rebuilding freight cars during a three-year training program
Conduct inspections to identify defects, evidence of wear, and damages.
Perform maintenance, including initial terminal air brake tests and other pre-trip inspections
Fabricate, cut or perform rough finish operations on metal and wood replacement parts.

Starting at $33.70 to $34.57 to $36.04 after graduating from apprenticeship program at $40.96

MIG and Stick welding in the shop. Our repair trucks are set up with stick welders. We use a 7018 and 6011 welding rod for stick applications. MIG is primarily done in the One Spot. We do everything from small repairs or applying parts that are welded into place to bigger more time-consuming fabrication/welding work on wrecked freight cars. Welding in the shop requires the employees to weld in various positions such as flat, vertical, and overhead.

Arc welding and torch work are the most common tasks we do when it comes to working with metal. We mainly arc weld. If people are working in some of the shops, they might have access to a mig welder. As far as fabricating, we use mild steel to make ladders, brackets, and different various parts of rail cars. We use presses to manipulate the metal as well as heat from a torch. We use torch's to cut damaged pieces off of cars, to cut/trim new pieces to fit the car, or cut holes to fasten different pieces together.

Apprentice Freight Car Repairer

-The wheel truck requires a CDL. Class B is sufficient.

-Our Traveling Car Inspectors require a CDL to perform line of road work and emergency repairs.

-Possessing a CDL may give them a better choice of jobs to choose from in our department due to their endorsements and our requirements.

-Prefer someone with no restrictions (know how to drive manual). UP has no automatics. Will train someone on automatics though.

Perform railroad track maintenance, repairs, and installations, including operating heavy equipment
Remove and replace rails, rail anchors, spikes, ballast, ties and other parts as needed
