Where to begin?

The search for scholarships can seem overwhelming. In the upcoming slides, you will discover a variety of places where you can begin your search.

Apply for any scholarships that you feel you may meet the eligibility criteria. Many scholarships are not given because no one applied for them.

Many scholarships may require reference letters from teachers, coaches, employers, etc. speaking to your abilities. It may be wise to start asking your potential references for a letter of recommendation in the fall and early winter.

To be eligible for these awards, students MUST complete a Google Form that will be made available in the Spring of each school year. This will be advertised on Twitter, our school webpage and in the Google Classroom.

Many of these awards are based on the following criteria:

Universities and Colleges

Every university and college offers scholarships and bursaries to their students.

University entrance scholarships are awarded based solely on marks. Students must apply before an advertised deadline in order to be considered. Check the post-secondary website for deadlines.

Many post-secondary schools also offer major awards which must be applied for separately. Check out the institution’s website for details.

Deadlines Matter

Please know that applications for scholarships will not be accepted after the deadline. Do not leave your application until the last minute. All applications require a transcript. You can request a transcript in Student Services, but this may take 2-3 business days.

As well, many applications require letters of reference. These take a lot of work on behalf of your referee. Please ask for letters a minimum of two weeks in advance. You cannot expect to receive a thorough letter of reference if you have not given the person adequate time. You should also provide them with a resume or a list of your extra-curricular activities.

Thank your referees. You can hand write a brief note or write a letter. Either way, ensure that you thank your referee for their effort and time.
