First, let's have a quick look at the Past Simple tense. So, we've already known that the structure of this tense is: Subject + was/were or V2/ed + Object. What do we use this tense for? We use it to describe actions or events that took place and finished in the past. Usually there are some signal words for you to know which are: yesterday, ago, last…For example: They got home very late last Tuesday. As you can see, the action “get home" has already finished on last Tuesday, which is the past, so we need use Past Simple here.

Second, we have the Past Continuous tense with the structure: Subject + was/were + V-ing + Object. For this particular tense, we use this to describe the action at a particular moment in the past. The action took place before that time but not finished. For example: I was watching TV at 10pm last night. The film started at 9 pm and maybe finished by 11 so, at 10 pm last night I was in the middle of watching it. Here we need to use the Past Continuous

For the second usage, we can also use the structure with expressions such as always/constantly/forever to describe repeated/irritating actions in the past. More often, when used in this way, the sentences will have a negative meaning. For example: My students were always complaining about the amount of homework I gave them. The students wanted to express their irritation to my constant action of giving them so much homework, so here we need to use the past continuous tense

Now, what if both of these two tenses used in one sentence? In that case, The two tenses will usually be combined by the word when/while/meanwhile to describe a short action/event that interrupted a longer action/event that was in progress in the past. For example: A storm hit Vienna while I was enjoying my holiday there last spring. Again, as you can see, here the subject’s action “enjoying” was interrupted by the action “hit" of the storm.
