Rigorous - We are one of the few middle school that offers Honors History. In this course students will be a part of the Haskell Genius Academy. I encourage you to stop by room 702 to learn about this as well as the cross curricular collaboration that occurs at Haskell. The courses we offer from our core classes to electives including CTE and Spanish classes are laying the foundation for our students to be academically successful in high school.

Supportive- We build supports into our Haskell community to set students up for success. This includes math push-in, pull-out, before and after school homework support, support in English Language courses, and mental health

Electives provide students an opportunity to take classes that interest them. Here at Haskell, we offer one of the largest selection of electives at the middle school level. As a STEM school, we want to provide students with a vast amount of opportunities that not only reflect the STEM focus, but also courses that gauge interests of students in the performing arts, CTE and college preparation. So let's talk about how we get into these courses - selection begins at the elementary school visits our administrative team attends in the month of February. Students who are slated to attend Haskell, will be able to submit a request of up 6 elective options. Students who enroll via schools of choice or out of district permit will also make such requests at a later date. Please note that in the middle and high school levels, students adhere to a school year broken up by semesters instead of trimesters. I mention this because depending on the elective, the course may either be a semester, in other words half year course, or year long. We do our best to accommodate a student’s top choices however their selection may be limited due to individual education plans or placement into much needed support courses. On deck tonight, we have our performing arts teacher Mr. Battalia in the MPR, STEM Lab teacher Mr. Mendoza in 704, Leadership/ASB with Ms. Lima in 702, CTE Broadcasting and Business with Mr. Gutierrez in 502 and Spanish with Ms. Vega in room 202. Please stop by their classrooms to hear more about their programs, or speak with an administrator should you have any questions about our other electives not present today.

Academic Support Courses

Support classes could be assigned in place of an elective based on a student’s academic history, progress, and/or teacher’s recommendation. Students will have the opportunity to exit from these programs when significant gains are made.

Middle School Math Prep : This course offers additional support, practice, and strategies for students to be successful in their assigned math class.

Reading Improvement: This course supports students to develop the more advanced literacy skills needed in secondary education.

English Learner Enrichment: This course supports English Learners to develop high levels of English proficiency utilizing evidenced based curriculum and instruction.
