Stereotype

Collins (2021) defines stereotype as

  • a fixed general image or set of characteristics that a lot of people believe represent a particular type of person or thing;
  • a set of inaccurate, simplistic generalizations about a group that allows others to categorize them and treat them accordingly.

Stereotypes are

assumptions about:

  • age;
  • economic status;
  • ethnicity and/or race,
  • gender identity or expression;
  • national origin;
  • physical appearance; and
  • religion.

Prejudice

Collins (2021) defines prejudice as

  • an unreasonable dislike of a particular group of people or things, or a preference for one group of people or things over another

Prejudices are

beliefs based on stereotypes, for example:

  • ageism;
  • ableism;
  • xenophobia;
  • racism;
  • nationalism; and
  • religious prejudice

Discrimination

Collins (2021) defines stereotype as

  • the practice of treating one person or group of people less fairly or less well than other people or groups (Collins, 2021)

Discrimination

happens when people act on their prejudiced beliefs, for example:

  • Age Discrimination
  • Disability Discrimination
  • Religious Discrimination
  • National Origin
