Ways to improve your Hygiene

  • Creating a routine

      • Set reminders to shower, wash your hair, clip your nails or brush your teeth by using your phone or making signs
      • Hang a sign on your bathroom mirror to brush your teeth as a reminder . Or put a sign by the kitchen sink to remind yourself to wash your hands before eating
      • Practice makes perfect, it takes time to learn a new habit but make it a priority and you will feel more comfortable. Add a new routine once you are ready!

Sun Safety

8 of 13

Why is Sun Safety important?

  • Protects us from things like Skin Damage, Skin Cancer, Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion
  • The sun helps our bodies make Vitamin D and it is important with helping our bodies build healthy bones and support our immune system
  • Enjoying the sun safely and avoiding sunburn should help you get a good balance
  • The perfect time to be outside is in the morning or late afternoon not midday
  • Too much UV from the sun or tanning beds raises the risk of skin cancer

Things to look for in Sunscreen

  • Water Resistant
    • For up to 40 or 80 minutes. Sunscreens are not water proof and need to be reapplied
  • SPF 15 or Higher
    • Tells you how well a sunscreen protect you from a sunburn
    • According to EWG and the Skin Cancer Foundation: SPF 30% blocks nearly 97% of UVB, SPF 50 blocks about 98% and SPF 100 blocks about 99%
  • Broad Spectrum
    • Means a sunscreen protects the skin from ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays
  • Sunscreen can expire and sometimes recalled
    • Make sure to look at your bottle to see if it is expired
    • Will be notified by the news if it is recalled

Use a layered approach for Sun Protection

  • Sunscreen must be re-applied every 2 hours after swimming, sweating and toweling off
  • Make sure to not get sunscreen in your eyes
  • Wear a hat, sunglasses and protective clothing to shield skin and eyes
  • Use broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 15 to protect exposed skin
  • Seek shade, especially during midday hours

  • Sun makes us sweat! As we learned about last week, make sure to hydrate extra when you are in the sun

  • Make sure your friends and family are also protected from the sun! Set a good example and share your sunscreen if you have extra so everybody can stay safe!
