Background and further discussion

The Draisienne was introduced in 1817 by Baron vin Drais while he was functioning as the Master of Woods and Forests in Baden, Germany.

He developed it to allow himself to cover long distances on foot, but without as much strain on his body. It was similar to a toy called a hobby horse, but it allowed the rider to steer where he was going.

The Netherand's Nationaal Archief (National Archives) has a photo of a later invention, the amphibious "Cyclomer" that is said to come from Paris in 1932.
