Porto Alegre was founded in 1772 by Portuguese immigrants from the Azores region.

During the 19th century, POA has received lots of European immigrants (mainly from German and Italian extraction), an important factor that shaped the cultural landscape and influenced local architecture, gastronomy and other city aspects.

The local economy is very diverse, with a concentration on the service sector, but being marked by strong clusters related to the creative industry, health services and academic and innovation environments, which are fostering a rising number of startups (POA is already 3rd in the country in startups).

The city's population is around 1,488,200 inhabitants

and GDP per capita of R$ 52,149.66 while the Brazilian average is US$ 8,300.00.
