Reading Test

  • All Reading Test questions are multiple choice and linked to literary or informational passages from published works.
  • Some passages stand alone; others are paired with another passage.
  • Informational graphics, such as tables, graphs, and charts, accompany some passages—but no math is required.
  • Prior topic-specific knowledge is never tested.

*65 minutes to answer 52 questions.

Reading Test Cont.

  • One literary passage–American or international work of fiction
  • Rest of passages are information: history, social studies and science
    • Topics: freedom, justice, human dignity
    • Purpose of the passages may be to: tell a story, make an argument, or explain a study or experiment.
  • Expect texts that range from 9th grade of high school level to the first year of college (~1050-1400 Lexile level).

  • You will be asked to:
    • Identify what the passage says directly and indirectly.
    • Think about how the author conveys meaning (rhetoric).
    • Draw conclusions
    • Make connections between two passages or between a passage and an informational graphic.
    • Define words used in context.
