CCA Science: Chemistry Courses
CP Chemistry:
In the Earth System
Recommended Prerequisite Coursework
Completion of CP Biology: The Living Earth
AND
Completion or co-enrollment in Integrated Math 1
Honors Chemistry:
In the Earth System
Completion of CP Biology: The Living Earth
(B or better recommended)
AND

Expectations: CP vs. Honors Chemistry
- Honors is recommended for students who are interested in taking any AP science course in the future
- Honors goes at a faster pace in order to cover more advanced topics and go more in depth
- Honors incorporates more advanced problems solving, calculations and application of concepts
Content: CP vs. Honors Chemistry
- CP Chemistry is an introductory course that focuses on conceptual understanding and quantitative analysis (algebra based). CP Chemistry covers atomic structure, energy and interactions with matter, bonding, intermolecular forces, solutions, chemical reactions, qualitative understanding of equilibrium, stoichiometry, acids/bases and thermochemistry. This course focuses on foundational knowledge and supports all students, including those interested in pursuing STEM in the future.
- Honors Chemistry covers the same topics as CP Chemistry, but also includes more advanced understanding of concepts, additional topics and quantitative analysis. Honors Chemistry includes quantum mechanics, energy and electromagnetic radiation calculations, advanced understanding of bonding and predicting properties based on intermolecular forces, solution chemistry and gas law calculations, calculating equilibrium and responding to stress, predicting chemical reactions based on reactivity and solubility rules, limiting and excess reagents calculations and thermochemistry calculations.
Want more chemistry? AP Chemistry
- Optional course for students who are interested in significantly more advanced chemistry topics.
- Recommended Prerequisite: Completion of Honors Chemistry: In the Earth System (B or better)
- Builds off previous knowledge to investigate atomic structure using spectroscopy, quantum mechanical approach to bonding, reaction kinetics, thermodynamic favorability, equilibrium redox, galvanic/electrolytic cells, weak acid/base chemistry and buffered systems.
- Intended to be taken in sequence (Honors Chemistry in fall + AP Chemistry in spring)
Want even more chemistry? Organic Chemistry (Grades 11-12 ONLY)
- Optional course for students who are interested in significantly more advanced chemistry topics.
- Recommended Prerequisite : Completion of AP Chemistry (B or better).
