  • Let’s talk Derby for a minute. In 2009, Mine That Bird had a 50-1 odds at winning the Derby. He was counted out before the

race even started. No one (well, not many) thought he could make it to the finish line as the winner of the Kentucky Derby.

But in May 2009 he shocked the world by demolishing all of the other contenders. Need a refresher of this historic race?

Click here. The announcers said his winning was an impossible result; a spectacular upset! This school year

parallels with the 2009 Derby winner. We had so much against us from the start of this school year. But we

made it! We are approaching the finish line. Let’s finish strong!

What is Growth Mindset?

Having a growth mindset means you believe your brain is a muscle.

Just like when you exercise your other muscles they grow, if you exercise your brain it will grow.

People with a growth mindset believe that they can learn new, challenging things if they keep trying and don’t give up.

Lesson 4:

KINDNESS - A Wrinkled Heart

148 of 155

Materials Needed:

  • red/pink paper - cut out big heart (Christy)
  • red/pink paper - cut out smaller hearts for students
  • Youtube video: A Wrinkled Heart (K-2)
  • Youtube video: Umbrella (3-5)

Lesson:

  • Show students the heart
  • Ask students to give examples of unkind actions - fold heart each time
  • Ask students to give examples of kind actions - unfold heart each time
  • Explain that wrinkles never completely disappear - as we experience kindness and forgiveness, our hearts open back up. The wrinkled heart symbolizes that even after we apologize for our unkind words/actions, they still leave a negative impression on that person’s heart.
  • Video: A Wrinkled Heart

Activity:

  • Give each student a heart and ask them to write different ways they can be kind to others
  • Collect hearts to create THE KINDNESS TREE
