Chapter 1

Discrimination

10 of 51

What is identity?

It's what defines you as the person you are!

E.g., age, ethnicity, eye color, hair color, skin color, height, personality traits, spoken language (s), etc.

11 of 51

Discrimination

What words or ideas do you think of when you hear this word?

Do you think there is discrimination at school? At home? In your daily life?

13 of 51

Discrimination

Discrimination is the act of distinguishing one thing from another with precision: one person is treated differently from another because of one or more of the characteristics that define their identity.

E.g.: Denying a person a job because of their religion or the color of their skin.

14 of 51

Reflection

How do you feel about exclusion or inclusion?

Have you ever been excluded or included in something based on a characteristic of your identity?

When I am excluded, I sometimes feel angry, frustrated, alone, different, confused, isolated, inferior, rejected, embarrassed...

15 of 51

All individuals are equal and should not be treated differently because of certain characteristics.

This also applies to sexual and gender diversity!

Chapter 2

The genderbread person

18 of 51

The Genderbread Person

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

To explain sexual and gender diversity clearly and briefly, I will start by introducing the Genderbread Person!

Here are 4 helpful concepts for talking about sexual diversity and gender identity.

19 of 51

The Genderbread Person

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

Each concept is independent and helps to define itself.

Each concept is a continuum: it is not mandatory to be at one extreme or another, it is possible to be "somewhere in the middle".

This is why there are many ways to define yourself: being a woman, a man, a little of both, etc.

20 of 51

The Genderbread Person : gender identity

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

How, you, in your mind, define your gender and how you consider to be in conformity with it (or not). It is therefore the inner feeling of being a man, a woman, neither, both, or one/other gender(s).

21 of 51

The Genderbread Person : Gender expression

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

Gender expression refers to a person's appearance and behaviors: clothing, style, hairstyle, makeup, demeanor, expression, etc. and how these expressions are interpreted according to gender norms.

22 of 51

The Genderbread Person : sex assigned at birth (biological)

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

Sexual characteristics at birth and during puberty: sexual organs, body shape, tone of voice, hair, hormones, chromosomes, etc.

23 of 51

The Genderbread Person : romantic or sexual attraction

Identity

Attraction

Expression

Sex (biological)

Indicates the sex or gender, towards which a person may have a romantic or sexual attraction.

It refers to a person's sexual orientation.

SCENARIOS

We will now do a role-playing activity.

For each scenario, you will need to answer the following questions:

  1. What is the type of discrimination presented in this situation?
  2. What is the problem in this situation?
  3. What could you do in this situation to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

36 of 51

SCENARIOS

My sister dresses as a boy at home and helps our dad fix the lawnmower. If the others knew that at school, it would be hell!

What is the type of discrimination presented in this situation?

Transphobia

What is the problem in this situation?

What could you do to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

The person is afraid that people at school will learn that his sister dresses and "acts like a boy" at home.

Explain to the brother that his sister has every right to act this way and that it is part of who she is as a person.

37 of 51

SCENARIOS

What type of discrimination is presented in this situation?

Homophobia

What is the problem in this situation?

What could you do to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

The younger brother questions his homosexuality and talks to his older brother for advice. His older brother tells him that homosexuality is abnormal.

Show empathy, advocate and comfort the person, reassure the person of his or her right to be attracted to other boys

These days, I am questioning my sexual orientation. I get a funny feeling in my stomach when I see one of my friends. I worked up the courage to ask my older brother for advice. I asked him if it was possible that I was attracted to boys. He told me that a boy shouldn't like another boy and that it's not normal!

Her friend experiences discrimination at school because her parents are both gay women.

Welcome the person experiencing discrimination, report others who are bullying them, talk about it with a trusted adult at school.

Sexism

What is the problem in this situation?

What could you do to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

His friend does not want to play sports with girls and mentions their inability to play well. He adheres to stereotypes about girls.

Challenge the situation by stating that it is wrong to believe that girls cannot perform well in any sport. There are great female athletes in all sports.

In physical education, my friend won't play basketball with the girls because he says they can't shoot a ball.

40 of 51

SCENARIOS

What type of discrimination is presented in this situation?

Transphobia

What is the problem in this situation?

The person does not want to have their hair cut by a hairdresser who has behaviors traditionally associated with the female gender.

Remind them that everyone is free to engage in behaviors that are associated with both girls and boys. This has no impact on that person's competence and professionalism.

What could you do to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

I don't want to get my hair cut by my mom's hairdresser, he talks and moves like a girl!

SCENARIOS

Homophobia

What is the problem with this situation?

What could you do to encourage respect for differences and sexual diversity?

His friend is living with discrimination and bullying at school. Kids call him gay and queer because he gets along better with girls and doesn't always make his shots in basketball.

Stand up for and comfort the person who is being discriminated against, support the person in reporting the unacceptable acts, and seek help from trusted adults.

What type of discrimination is presented in this situation?

My friend gets called gay because he gets along better with girls than boys. He was called a "fag" when he missed a shot while we were playing basketball at recess. He even changes his route to school in the morning to avoid the gang of guys who call him gay.

The child's mother finds it odd and worries because her child's bus driver is a trans person.

Praise the person who is open and not bothered by the situation. It is important to accept the other person as they are and be open to them. It doesn't change your skills as a bus driver.

I heard the bus driver used to be a woman, my mom thinks it's weird, I think he's nice and it doesn't really bother me.

Your role in situations of discrimination

  • Accepting the other person as they are;
  • Apologize if you have done or said something wrong to someone and acknowledge your mistakes;
  • Show empathy, openness to differences, get to know and try to understand the other person instead of judging them;
  • Defending and supporting the person who is being discriminated against;
  • Support the person who is being discriminated against by sharing what you have seen or heard;
  • Speak out against unacceptable acts of discrimination and inequality;
  • Seek help from family, school staff, a trusted adult, friends, advocates, a crisis line, etc.

Besides being assigned a gender at birth, each person has their own identity and can express it as they wish.

It is very possible to have interests, attitudes, or behaviors associated with the other sex and still conform with your gender identity.

It is disrespectful, hurtful and unacceptable to laugh at or exclude someone because they behave differently from others or because of their gender, gender identity, sexual orientation or the way they speak.

Each person has the same value, holds the same rights and freedoms regardless of their personal characteristics.

Things to remember

All of us can help ensure that we live in an environment that is respectful and supportive of sexual diversity.
