Program Introduction
This program is designed to provide students with the language and literary opportunities required to succeed in the twenty-first century. The students will work to develop collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to help them succeed wherever life takes them. Students will build on their language skills and experiences through reading, writing, listening, speaking, viewing and presenting. These are skills that are interrelated and will be focused on throughout our classes.

Overview
This class is designed to provide English learners the opportunity to engage with English in meaningful and exciting ways relative to their current lives and futures. The goal of this class is to not only improve English learner’s conversation skills and confidence using English, but also aims to help them become more interested in the �language and more motivated to use it through �small group conversations, informal presentations, �and listening activities.
Free Reading
Overview
Free reading is a course for English learners in which they are permitted and encouraged to explore English literature that is both appropriate for their reading level and interesting to them. Throughout the course, they continue to develop their language skills and strategies in reading comprehension, fluency, and critical thinking. Students will then be tasked with putting together reports in which they must analyze and critique their �chosen material.
Writing
Overview
Writing is an incredibly useful and potentially fun medium of expression…this course aims to improve students’ expressive ability in English. Building off prior knowledge and experience, students will explore different writing genres (including narrative, poetry, and formal research writing), reinforce the basics of process writing and become familiar with some of the essential elements of good writing (content, organization, voice, word choice, etc.).
ESL Grading Criteria
The combined solo written work completed, including both in class and homework assignments.
