The “On the Way to School” Project is delighted to invite you formally to our first in-person Open Public Event, marking the project's launch. This event aims to introduce and discuss the research project, its aims and approaches to improving children and adolescents' physical and mental health through active travel to school.

To assess the acceptability and impact of active mobility to and from school interventions (AMTS) for promoting healthy lifestyle practices and mental well-being
Focusing on two contrasting case studies in different global regions (Africa and Latin America): Bogotá (Colombia) and Maputo (Mozambique)
We will assess specific implementation outcomes of AMTS interventions (i) Al colegio en bici (Cycling) and (ii) Ciempiés Caminos Seguros1 (Walking) and use citizen science to assess the impact of cycling and walking interventions on physical activity and mental well-being outcomes.

To interrogate (i) the acceptability and impact and (ii) the feasibility and adaptability of active mobility to and from school (AMTS) interventions as catalysts for the promotion of healthy lifestyle practices and mental well-being among children and adolescents aged 11 to 16 in two distinct cultural, economic, governance and socio-spatial environments.

Unpacking AMTS
To understand the appropriateness and acceptability of existing AMTS interventions and enhance their health service delivery
Assessing AMTS
To measure the impact of cycling and walking on enhancing healthy lifestyle practices and mental well-being and reducing common NCD risk factors in secondary-school adolescents.

Piloting AMTS
To identify the challenges and potentials of adapting ATMS interventions and assess their feasibility for implementation in a different urban context.
Capacity Building
To strengthen and build research capacity across different socio-spatial and health environments to implement, monitor and evaluate ATMS interventions.

GACD is the only collaboration of major international research funding agencies specifically addressing the growing burden OF Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in low- and middle-income countries, and vulnerable populations in high-income countries.
