Engage from Inner Virtue

為 = behave

腹 = stomach

The five colors can blind one’s eyes. 五色令人目盲

The five tunes can deafen one’s ears. 五音令人耳聾

The five flavors can dull one’s taste buds. 五味令人口爽

The riding and hunting can wild one’s mind. 馳騁畋獵,令人心發狂

The valuable goods can hinder one’s behavior. 難得之貨,令人行妨

Thus, a saint cultivates upon stomach, not from eyes. 是以聖人為腹不為目

Hence, he rejects others and chooses this. 故去彼取此

五色 = five colors: green, red, yellow, white, black

令 = let, allow

人 = human, people

目= eye, vision

盲= blind (can’t use in the righteous way)

All the scenery that will disturb our mind can causes our vision to be spiritually and mentally blind.

  • The power of pollution: evil, violence
  • Eyes can elevate or destroy one.
  • Purpose of eyes: see the appropriate / Differentiate right from wrong
  • Don’t allow the sense to disturb our inner being. Observe inner being. Calm inner being.

五音 = 5 tunes
令人 = let, allow
耳 = ear
聾 = deaf

  • Obscene music
  • Gossips
  • Complaint
  • Slander
  • Unconstructive criticism
  • Unhealthy dialogue
  • Flattering
  • Compliment

All the sound that disturb our mind can causes our hearing spiritually and mentally impair.

"Whoever

see me through forms or hear me thru sounds

are on deviant paths,

and will not be able to witness Buddha"

若以「色」見我,以「音聲」求我,是人行邪道,不能見如來

The five flavors can dull one’s taste buds. 五味令人口爽

五味 = sour, sweet, bitter, spicy, salt

令人 = let/allow

= mouth

= violation, against, not following the rule

Ex: 爽約= miss appointment

  • Not create affinity with the food source.
  • Not eat meat in 3 the circumstances: Not hearing, not seeing, not for me.
  • Breast-fed baby. Olympic Cows.

All the taste that disturb our mind can pollute our inner nature impair.

The riding and hunting can wild one’s mind. 馳騁畋獵,令人心發狂

馳騁(ˊ ㄔㄥˇ) = Riding and racing on horse (working)

(ㄊㄧㄢˊ) = open field or farm

= hunting (fame, reputation)

令人= let/allow

= mind

= develop

= wild, crazy (out of control, unnatural)

Constant in pursuit of fame and wealth will disturb our mind.

Refers to sports and entertaining purpose:

gambling, boxing, fishing, parkour, bullflight (Texas), archery, video game etc.

難得 = rare / precious

= of

= material / merchandize

令人 = let/allow

= behavior

= hinder/obstacle

The valuable good can hinder & control our consciousness.

With such possession (cars, jewellery, life), people are likely to protect & guard the goods from stolen, thus, it become an obstacle of their freedom of mind and conducts. Ex. my dog

Luxury car, diamond, getting jewlery from bank safe

Inner self

Thus, a saint cultivates upon stomach, not from vision.是以聖人為腹不為目

Therefore, he rejects others and chooses this.故去彼取此。

是以 = Thus/therefore

聖人 = saint or saints (we)

= behave / conduct / practice / cultivate

= stomach (internal virtue / inner self)

不為= don’t behave / don’t conduct / don’t practice

= eyes

= Thus/therefore/then

= eliminate / delete

= others (indulge in the material and sensory pleasures.)

= choose / pick

= this (inner virtue, consciousness )

Original purposes:

  • Eyes: read to see. learn and grow
  • Ears: to hear inspirational tune
  • Tongue: digestion for energetic food (super food)
  • Body: virtue
